any studies on pre-loading nest boxes?

Does anyone know of any studies and/or evidence of Blues being more attracted to nest boxes that appear to have been used before? Landlords of Purple Martins swear by the technique of pre-loading the nests and making the housing looked used (by smearing mud). They say it makes it look like the housing was used successfully before, thereby making the Martins feel safer in choosing the nest site. I was wondering if anyone has tried to add clean nesting material such as pine needles to the boxes before nesting season, and if it makes any difference in the boxes the Bluebirds choose to nest in. I know they'll just toss most of it out. But would it make them feel more secure, and thus be more likely to choose a pre-loaded box in the first place?
