first spring robin

there have been flocks of robins in the local parks and river trails all winter even with the above normal snowfall and cold cold temps. but this is the first one in my backyard so far and he was really enjoying the apples i had tossed out that were getting wrinkles

Would it make any difference if the apple is quartered or should it be whole?

i don't know i still have part of a bucket of apples left and have been throwing them out in the yard a few at a time whole and the magpies and jays or the deer get most of them but the robin came every hour or so and got a fill before the others got them all. this one never got up on the platform or the hopper one with a tray under it. other years some robins or bluebirds would try the feeders and i would put raisens or cramberrys or fuit in pieces for birds and the grosbeaks tried them too

Yes I was hearing the robins last few days but today I saw a male and female in my birch tree so funny as they are usualy one ground the poor things were flapping there wings like what on earth are we doing in Mi. dont ya know it is snowing here today ha. I had to laugh. Happy Spring yeh right. poor things and us too. I have my grow light in basement ready but havenot started my peppers and tomatoes will wait 8 weeks before planting for tomatoes and a bit longer for peppers. It is exciting I have some wintersowing flowers been watching but not much moving yet.

Well, Konrad, those robins took ten days to get from Beaumont to Ellerslie (a ten minute highway drive). I just saw and heard my first one this evening. But, he was so nice. A big, dark colored male, really letting the world know he had arrived. And he loved my flower beds. Fed in there for about ten minutes. We don't have many (more like none) mature trees around here right now, which is probably why I haven't seen any until tonight. He's probably a bit late and can't find a mate. Their eggs should just about be ready to hatch, shouldn't they? Shauna

I cannot believe that I didn't see/hear a robin in the last two days! I was sure that I would, the weather was typical of when they come ... also listening for the woodcock. Oh well, the cardinal is singing and the doves are making eyes at each other so I know it's the end of winter anyway.

Thanks. I have some apples I got to give to my horse, but I think he will understand if I try one for the birds!!

Well, I ate some of the apple, but threw the core out by the bird feeders. :)
I'll see if it's there in the morning. Of course, who knows what night critters might like apples too. Also my schnauzer enjoyed a little bit of it as well.
