Looking for a woodpecker expert.

We have decorative trim around several windows in our new home. this trim is a commercial product that is styrofoam with a stucco like finish. woodpeckers (downy, i believe) have started pecking in several places often times resulting in large 2" holes. this started last summer and happens at different times of the year. don't know if they're looking for food or a nesting site. can anyone out there explain why this is happening and how to prevent it? any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
