Hi Bluebirders,

I lurk here often in spring and summer. I learn a great deal by reading your messages.

I was just reading Anita's updates on her chicklets, and I thought, How do these people do it every year? It is one worry after the other!

So I want to thank you for making Eastern bluebirds happen! If it weren't for your tenacity and devotion, there would be way less color in the northeast! And a species that used to be the most common nesting bird in the east would have disappeared!

If you look at conservation successes, you will see that it is always grass-roots people, not governments or agencies, that ignite passions and make a difference.

I live in a wildlife refuge that has the highest breeding population of EABBs in NJ! And it was Bluebirders, not the feds, who established the original trails.

So: Thank you.

Elly, thank YOU for taking the time to give us a pat on the back! Much appreciated by all of us, I'm sure.

I'm also sure that the bluebirding addiction has cause major marital problems for many of us, LOL! My husband and sons have rolled their eyes at me so many times in the last 7 years (during nesting season) that I'm surprised their eyes haven't rolled out of their sockets! Making dinner during nesting season, NO WAY! :D

On a serious note it really can test your sanity and mainly because some things are just totally out of our control. We can give them the best nest box and the safest setting possible and still loose eggs, babies and even adults. But, when I drive through my large subdivision and see bluebirds everywhere I am sure that many of them have fledged from my back yard box. Over 75 in my years of bluebirding.

I'd like to add thanks to those who not only offer nest boxes in their yards but also take the time to get a trail going and monitor that! There are several members here (I'm not one of them) who do both! That would dive me to drink....even more than I already do! LOL!

Hi Elly, thank you for the kind words. I only have a couple of boxes and I consider it a privilege to have these beautiful creatures nesting here. I applaud those who give their time and energy, as Janie said, to creating and monitoring entire trails. What a job! I have to also second her feeling of satisfaction at seeing so many bluebirds around my development as well. I'm sure some of them and their offspring are "mine" and I'm happy about that. And I will add that it is wonderful to see you here and please stay awhile!

Greg and Joan, I'm looking forward to more pics from you two! Golden Pagoda is intriguing. You don't see that one much, and I bet it gets very prominent points in the Houston heat. Joan, maybe you hire a little crew of teenagers every Spring Break to help you out with those 200 trees! Can't wait to see the blooms that are developing here, and you bet I'll post when I get a chance. Robert, that Lemon Drop is Thornton's and one of only a few big ones I have. It's certainly the "branchiest". That's what you can look forward to in a few more years! Bill, our little guy gets us invited back to a lot of places! We would all love to go back to CA soon. Will definitely let you know if we get a chance. K, glad the seeds are coming up for you; they're the perfect flowers for a Texas drought! Yes, that is TLD on the tree because my memory is just THAT bad, lol. Sometimes I abbreviate and then ask myself, "Now what the heck does that stand for again?" Dave, thanks for the compliments! I'm in Austin. We're 8b but I've seen at least one big plumeria tree kept in the ground all winter in my neighborhood. It can be done in a sheltered spot with frost cloth since our freezes are all short-lived. Mike, I found another possible oh-please-let-it-be inflo today, so I feel like I won the lottery! Hope you also have a great bloom year!

I must also thank all those who advise here. Because of ya'll and the things I've learned here over the last year or so, my HVAC guy says I'm the most informed customer he's had in quite some time. Oddly, we also ended up with the very same system he has in his own home. THANKS AGAIN!

This was our itinerary and we stuck to it pretty well. It all worked in that it kept us busy and going the whole time without a lot of driving in between. I think our longest straight drive was 2 hrs. Day 3, we lucked out and just caught up with a walking tour by a docent from the Museum of NM History which lasted 2 hours and he pointed out a nice place to have lunch inside an old hacienda. Day 4, after the horseback ride, we didn't feel a need to go back to chimney rock as we'd seen it on the horseback ride which was *fabulous*. But we did spend time hiking Plaza Blanca which was also incredible. Day 8, we hit Bandolier really early, before 8am so we had time to then hit Valles Caldera, which one of the wranglers at ghost ranch recommended. So glad we did and so glad we had a 4 wd vehicle which handled the 14 miles of dirt road just fine. And Day 8/9, Jemez springs, we didn't really "see" but drove through the canyon to stay at this little luscious place by the creek with a view, did a lot of relaxing and meditating, and got a couples massage (thank you mtnrd) before heading off to the airport to return home.
