Pics of Momma and Pappa Blue

Hi everyone, I have not been fortunate enough to attract blues to where I currently live (I had an active pair at my last house), so I like to go out and find them. Last week, my boyfriend and I went to Pymatuning State Park on the Ohio/Pennsylvania border and we were lucky and got to spend hours with this active nesting couple. We watched the parents scurrying around getting worms for the babes. It was a real treat. Here are some pictures I took.

Nice pics! It seems they are used to human visitors. Hopefully someone is monitoring the nestboxes. I noticed a stamping on the side of the nestbox; looks like Pennsylvania Game Commission. I found more info about them linked below; some awesome pics there you can click on and see extreme closeups.

Well, Wow that is quite the trait! I see what you mean every violet has them, but some are so small, I can barely consider it a leaf, these are quarter sized, and look like the momma leaves, quite unique. I have read that if they are propagated by leaf, they sport, and quite often go back to a faded blue, so am I safe to assume that if I did give it away, it would lose its name and become "a sport of".....Would the suckers bloom true to the parent? These AV genetics stump me sometimes....lol Thanks

Six nestlings Donna. Wow that's really cool. They are lucky to have you to supplement their young. What I found surprising is that in past years when the weather was very cold during brooding they ended up with blow fly larva in the nest. This year the weather was warm and sunny (up until fledge day) and there was no sign whatsoever of a single blowfly larva when I removed the old nest.

This picture has been going around for several years now. When I read it, it was supposedly from High Island, which is near here. None of the long time rehabbers here had any knowledge of it. If anyone called a zoo and told them they had a baby deer, they would probably have a game warden at their house within the hour. Also, if anyone finds a baby deer...please leave it alone. The mother often leaves them unattended, but she will return. That, and it is illegal to keep a deer. Even wildlife rehabbers have to have a special permit and facilities for deer. Here is a fawn some people found unattended and carried it around for awhile before deciding they didn't want to keep it and dropped it off at my friend's house, a wildlife rehabber. It was taken to a rehabber who has the special permit for deer, but it should have been left alone to be raised by it's mother.

Hi again and thanks! I was in seventh heaven getting to spend several hours with this pair. Yes, the boxes are well maintained and monitored. Nothing gets my craw more than when a box is put up and not monitored. (Saw several boxes erected but not monitored over the weekend (completely different location) - and we had to pull out sparrow nests out of two boxes.) But this particular area of the park was filled with TRES and this pair of blues. They get along fabulously in harmony. It's a shame that other bird species can't take some lessons from the TRES on how to play nice!

Blake, very nice photos! I'm so glad you were able to find a place to watch bluebirds. I'm sure it's hard to have had them at your last house but not at the new one. Maybe one day!

Hi Janie... I remember you from my early years on this forum. It's been a long time but I've recently been coming back and reading posts and getting reacquainted again. I remember Bluebars too and Vonda (and a few others)...and does Malinda still post here?

Anyway, I miss my blues so much (my ex-husband is holding them "hostage" at my previous residence...I did one thing right and that was teach him how to take care of them.) I guess they come back every year and for that I'm grateful because I left that legacy to the neighborhood. I taught everyone about the blues and they keep coming back every year. Now I if could only get so lucky and get some at my current house.
