Do you know these birds ? and a couple extra photos

The first two photos are of birds my husband took this morning. They acted like a pair, but this is the first time we have seen them at our feeders and do not recognize them. We checked our bird book and the closest we can come to them is a cowbird, but there are some differences. They are similar in size to a cardinal and the beak is heavy like a cardinal, but it is black.

Those pictures are really nice. Hopefully someone will be able to answer. I have seen this same bird in my yard and couldn't figure out an ID either. I searched through all my bird books and couldn't find a match.

Let's hope there is something in that particular plant that will cause it to happen again. It could have commercial potential I would think but it would be worth more to me as an example of the wonders and vagaries of nature. There will be scales on that bulb, but it has to be something in the system of the bulb which has currently produced it to cause that, just a conjecture. But offshoots of the bulb just might have inherited the potential for that as well. Just mark the plant and keep an eye on it next year. Or it was just some unexplainable fluke in the particular bud that produced that flower. I'd dig into more of this sort of thing if I were younger and had the time and means.

I definitely have to try B. Yuccoides! Looks almost like a small agave both in bloom and leaf form. Probably best as a zone 8 plant and up, but I have lots of zone 8 plants that do well with some extra protection, so if I get a B. Yuccoides, I will probably give it some winter protection, especially rain and snow protection! I dont think any plant likes wet and cold combined! So far the only cactus I have gotten to survive in my soil all year long without protection is eastern prickly pears (native) and out of about 20 pink lace cactus, about 3 survived (they were flooded in water and even frozen in solid ice for a good part of the winter and spring so I give them a ton of credit for surviving that!). -Alex

ideefix: i hooked up my vcr to my tv and tivo (i have directv), because when i got directv i knew that i'd want to move some recordings--including a lot of movies on tv--off the tivo to eventually watch on a tv in a different room (i have tivo only on one tv, directv on 2 tvs.) and to make sure i didn't come close to the storage limit on tivo! i figured i would need special equipment. maybe it's not worth it anyway! i'd have to go through maybe 40 videotapes of "Simply Quilts"--each tape holding 6 shows!

That is a fledgling Mourning Dove. Too early to tell whether it's a male or female...but both parents care for their young...and are mated for life. One usually sits with the young during the day while the other goes food shopping. When the "shopping" parent returns...he/she feeds the fledgling and the parent who sat all day long...goes off for the night...usually returning very early in the morning to relieve the sitting parent. The fact that there's no adult with this fledgling says one of two things. One...the fledgling is old enough to be on his/her own. Or two...the fledgling...while learning to fly...has gotten himself/herself into a real pickle. My bet is that he's on his own...but I'm saying that with very little evidence other than my personal observations around my own home. Mourning doves are renowned for making very flimsy nests...or renting an existing nest...or laying their eggs on the ground in a seemingly secure area. If this area in your yard is sheltered and relatively safe...it wouldn't be at all unusual for the female to use it as her nesting area. She usually lays two eggs...and can lay twice a year...depending on your geographic area. Definitely...if you are able...protect the area from cats. This fledgling is developed enough to fly...but not with the strength or reactive time of an adult dove. Beyond that...just keep an eye out for a returning parent....either at dusk or dawn. You may get a pleasant surprise. HTH Anne

Thanks everyone. I guess our 'maybe' was correct. The beak/bill (what is the difference?) did not seem to match. We got a new bird book this evening and when we were checking it out, I first went to the cowbird.

I cropped the original photo which had the other bird which I believe is the male. He looked a little longer, and not quite as full bodied.

The male Cowbird would be completely black with a chocolate brown head. Both of the pics above would be females. The juvies are similar to the females but have lots of striping according to my book. Not great birds to have around during nesting season as they are parasitic brooders. They don't build their own nest. Instead, they lay their eggs inside the nests of other birds, and then the other bird species feeds and raises their chicks. The Cowbird egg hatches first, and this decreases the survival chances of the nest builder's own offspring as the parents have been slaving away feeding the big hungry Cowbird chick, often causing their own to starve.
