Bought a new bluebird box and hole reducer.

Ok I bought a new box and reducer. Will the blues accept this new box? They look so confused because they have always used the box that the dees are in. I don't want to loose by blues this year. Is there anything else that I can do to encourage the blues to use this new box? That for all the advice.

Good going Indigo. If they like the area they may settle for this box. If you have a birdbath and a meal worm feeder they have no reason to go elsewhere! GOOD LUCK!

Did you put it up yet? I would think they would readily accept it if they are wanting that other box. Thanks for helping the Dees out by getting that reducer!!

Maureen, have you gotten your minis yet?? Please update us. I placed an order for five with BB last weekend and am anxiously awaiting mine. Last year, I bought four from her, but the evil powdery mildew got all but one (I thought I was being so careful... I think I need a fan in my office). I've just sterilized all of my pots (little blue bonsai pots with which I wick-water) in anticipation of their arrival. Yay! Korina, you crack me up -- I was happy to "see" you over on the begonia board today -- I have a begonia at my office with my AVs, and just bought three more (uh oh) gorgeous NOID begonias for home, so I was researching a potting medium for them. Sounds like I can use my sphag-perlite-vermiculite AV mix for the begonias, too... also, off-topic, how do you like the SciFi channel's Doctor Who? (It's my first exposure, though I've heard of the show before...I find him kind of cute!). Anyway, posts from you always make me laugh, so it was neat to "run into" you over on the begonia board. But really, Maureen, this is your thread, so please let us know if you've gotten your new babies yet!!

Are you sure the completed nest has no eggs?Chickadees will cover their eggs when leaving the nest.DON'T poke around the nest to check.I always use a 1 1/8" reducer on all my houses that Chickadees choose.I have never had any abandon the nest,But I always install it after I am sure eggs have been laid.If if were me I would keep a eye on them for a few days.When you are sure eggs have been layed ,install the reducer.As far as the nest that has just been started,If the blues do take it over,a least the Chickadees can still use the empty box you have.I have never used a reducer during nest building.

Hello svDousman. Great to see you have an eastern bluebird pair. The second hole is not a big deal. To prevent predation of the nest the best thing you can do is put the box on a slick metal emt pole with a stovepipe baffle. There are actually two hole boxes you can buy because they help better protect against house sparrow attacks giving a bluebird inside under attack an escape hole. There are other ways to protect against them too like a sparrow spooker. Does the box open? The nest should be checked a few times a week to make sure all is ok. Yes the birds will return each year to the same box if they were successful previously. I would like to invite you to share your story and join the blue bird nut cafe forum. Dax, Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but if you don't intend to properly mount the boxes, monitor them all once or twice a week, and control invasive species like house sparrows and european starlings in your area, then you won't get bluebirds in your boxes. If you do and don't control house sparrows in your area, one day your bluebirds or any other cavity nester you get will be attacked by sparrows. It sounds like you are willing to learn and we all have to start somewhere. Yes I put it up just as soon as I gat home with it. I did notice the male bird was on top of it a couple of times, but then they would go back to the old box. I have several birdbaths in my yard. I don't have a big yard but I make sure my birds are taken care of. I hope they will accept this box cause I sure do want a family of blues this year. Everyone say a special prayer that I will have a family of dees and blues in my yard this year. Thanks so much for everyones advice. If anyone else has any more advice please let me no. Thanks again!

Indigo there are a bunch of us that have been on this forum for years and are just passing on what we learned here. Heck most of us didn't know squat when we came here. Your doing a great job! You have done everything you can do for now.....yup leave it in Gods hands and see what happens!
(do you have meal worms)? I have a new pair (I think) this year they do not seem to be trained to come for worms, they will figure it out when there are babies.

Well, I will certainly say the prayer indigo! I do have very HIGH hopes for you!! I bet those Blues will jump right on into that house very soon. It's much less work for them than trying to evict the Chickadees would be. Did you face your new BB box in a different direction than the Chickadee's box faces? It might help if they can't see each other's entrance holes. Just my thoughts there. :o) Keep us posted often please??~~Angie

Well it looks like the blues are getting use to the new box. They have been going in and out all day. I opened it up alittle while ago and low and behold there was pinestraw. Yea!! I think they are liking it. Lets hope there will be eggs soon! Thanks everyone for the advice that you guys have given me. Its so nice to have a place like this to come to for advice and help. I will be keeping updates for everyone

That's GREAT news Indigo! It looks like I might get a box of Dees this year too, cant quite tell yet but they were in and out a few times today. (you may want to tell the lady at the store to quit giving advise until she knows what she is talking about).
