Yes, Marti, just try giving away squash! I bake fresh bread, put it in a bag with squash, and go visit neighbors. It works!

I wish I could grow squash! I like it much better than okra, but dh likes okra. Fried, ugh.

Next year I want to grow less okra & make room for zuchinni.

You could always make pickled okra to give as gifts for xmas. Just a suggestion please don't throw it at me.

Marti, pick the okra when it's about 2-3 inches long, trim the stems real short and blanch them in boiling water for about a minute. Then plunge them into cold water for a minute, drain well and pack in freezer bags. Or you can lay them out on baking sheets, not touching, freeze them and then pack in freezer bags, so they don't stick together in the freezer. Okra freezes well and keeps for months if you draw all the air out of the bag before freezing.

I haven't grown okra for a couple years cause my DH doesn't care for it at all and when I grow it I have to eat it all by myself. But if I'm down around San Antone any time soon I'll be sure and swing by for some of yours. Cheryl

Sorry, I'm near Dallas. I have cut them, rolled in cornmeal & frozen them, but it's not as good as fresh of course. I've got enough of that done to last until next spring. I'm not wild about pickled okra & can't eat it boiled in any way. Squash either, although I used to choke down a bite or two for dh's grandparents.

Dh took a big bag to work this morning so he'll find a taker I'm sure.

There you go. If your dh likes okra so much, he should be a good salesman when it's time to get rid of the extra. ;-)

Have you thought about offering it to the food bank or any other non-profit organization that might have a use for it? If that doesn't win, how about trying to post it on Craigslist?

How about passing it along to a food shelter?

Our church has a food pantry that gardeners take their extra produce to give to needy families and they are really happy to get it but some others won't take it. You will have to check with yours and see. I wish I had some. A friend gave me a bag last week and I was so excited to get it but even though it was small it was all hard as a rock. I think she was picking it for a couple of weeks and putting it all in the same bag in the fridge before she have it to me,lol. I was able to pick through it and get a good mess out of it but it made me sick that I had to throw away so much of it. I told her next time she gets a lot let me know and I'll come over and pic it myself and put a bunch up in the freezer. I use it in my chicken and sausage gumbo all the time and like it whole in some peas and beans. I made an excellent dish the other day with it by flower and browing cubed pork chops and sauteed onion pepper and garlic added a can of tomatoe paste and let it all cook down into a gravy then added the okra at the end. It was really good.
