Have Momma Blue Confused

I put down the wren guard and now Momma is so confused she sits on top and pecks at the mylar strips and hasn't figured out yet the guard I'll try to let her get use to it for a little longer to see if she adapts.

My Mom didnt figure it out yet either, It's getting down to 29 tonight and she has 5 eggs, I took it off as I am sure she will want to be on the nest tonight. We will try again tomorrow.I have only seen Wrens 1 out of the going on 7 years and thats when they were cutting dow quite a few trees to sell the lumber the next property over. I know they are here but left un disturbed they stay in the deeper woods. (HOPEFULY) I will get Mom used to the guard tomorrow with no problems between now and then.

I know its going to get down in the 30's this evening so I put up the guard, she had 4 eggs and this evening she did go inside and was in there when it got dark so I'm glad I removed the guard because its cool tonight. She was funny though she would get on top of the spooker and pull at the mylar strings hanging down like it was there fault the wren guard was there.

Hi Janie... I remember you from my early years on this forum. It's been a long time but I've recently been coming back and reading posts and getting reacquainted again. I remember Bluebars too and Vonda (and a few others)...and does Malinda still post here? Anyway, I miss my blues so much (my ex-husband is holding them "hostage" at my previous residence...I did one thing right and that was teach him how to take care of them.) I guess they come back every year and for that I'm grateful because I left that legacy to the neighborhood. I taught everyone about the blues and they keep coming back every year. Now I if could only get so lucky and get some at my current house.

deedee, if you've used a bleach solution on the inside of the nestbox then it is important to let the box air dry before closing it back up. I only do the bleaching at the end of nesting season and if there's been an unexplained loss of a nestling or adult bird that could be attributed to disease. Otherwise, my nestboxes get a good brushing out and a renewed application of vaseline on the inside of the roof to protect against wasp nests and then are ready for the next round. I think your papa blue will figure things out. Kathy

tnjoseph....they lay one egg per day until the clutch is complete. Check tomorrow afternoon, you should see another egg. Don't check in the morning as that is typically when they lay eggs. Knock sofly on the box before opening or talk a bit so she knows you are coming if she is in there. Once she is done laying she will start incubating..incubation typically starts the day the last egg is laid. Incubation is normally 12-14 days and then hatching occurs. Typically 14 days is the norm. Once hatched the nestlings are in the box 16-19 days before they fledge. You can look to make sure all is ok but don't open the box after day 13 to prevent premature fledging. Well more bad news. I looked through the hole and saw no activity and heard none so I opened and saw the last baby, previously alive, had died. I have no idea what happened to him. No trauma from what I could see and this afternoon I definitely saw him moving around in the hole. What in te world happened to my little baby? He was supposed to fly free today. I don't know that I want to clean out the house and try for another now. Mommy is out there flying around with her newly chosen mate and I wonder if she is heartbroken as I am? Again, what in the world happened to this last baby?

I couldn't get my female to accept the wren guard on Sat. She's got 5 eggs and the temps dropped overnight so I didn't try again.

One good thing...the male bluebird is 'on the job.' I've seen him chase the freaking wrens all over the place. And I took the extra boxes out of commission (in years past, I had extra boxes for them but THAT didn't help either).

I am monitoring the inside of the box with the videocam. Mama is not gone very long from the nest.

I have to trust that between the two of them and me, we'll be OK.

I think I've learned my lesson. That is, put the wren guard up when she lays the first egg.

I put up a "training" guard today, better than nothing and should be simple enough to figure out, prolly even for a Wren, 4" wide and 4" out no sides. I'm sure They will get the hang of it. This is last years male, not sure why this is a problem, but then he is one of those that fights himself in the window....maybe not the brightest Bird I have ever had, but I must say he does keep a very watchfull eye on Moma when she is at the box.
