Momma found a new man and babies are leaving the nest.

I looked out this morning before church and saw a male blue chasing some of the other backyard birds away. Next I see him flying behind the the mom over to the neighbors tree. No sooner I look and see slightly blue fleathers flittering in the wire fence by the back gate and go out to see if it could be a bird stuck somehow and sure enough it is one of the babies. A look into the hole in the box I see other heads and beaks sticking up so most of them were still in there. At first I thought it was way too early because time flew so fast but then realized it has been 19 days and we quit opening the box the begining of the week.

A look in the hole there is still at least one more baby in there. After this one fledges do I go ahead and wash out the box to see if momma wants to mate with this new male blue?

Hello there, once you are positive that they have all fledged you should remove the nest and make sure the nestbox is clean. If it's clean I usually just wipe out any dust that might be left behind. If it looks dirty I wash it out and let it dry before I close it. Congrats on the fledging.

Congrats! I do the same as Anita but my box is always pretty nasty so I remove the nest as soon as they fledge, hose it out and scrub the inside with a little bleach mixed with water, and hose it out again. I, too leave it open to dry thoroughly. Hope Momma will set up housekeeping again with her new mate!

shawnamaverick You should probably get some duck feed as ducks require different nutrition than other birds. Provide some small gravel for digestion. With our farmed ducks we have the heat lamp at about 90 degrees F the first week and decrease it by 5 degrees per week. It may be illegal where you are to keep a wild duck so you should check into that. Duck will need fresh water every and food that meets it's nutritional need. Depends on the type of duck, but if it's a water fowl it will likely roost on the ground so just a safe place for night. You may find that the duck will not accept the chukar. Ducks imprint very strong on what they see when they hatch. In this case it believes it is a duck. If it was hatched out by humans it would believe it was a human. Ducks can be very aggressive so be prepared for that. You may find you have a loudly quacking baby on your hands for a while, they are flock animals.

My last Spicebush baby eclosed this morning. It is the one I photographed next to it's sibling as it was about to form it's chrysalis ... I think this is another male :-(. Happy it is healthy and hopefully a little female is still flitting about since there were eggs laid recently on the in ground spicebush plants. once out of the rearing cage, it was off to have a drink ... Pipevine Swallowtail on left - Spicebush Swallowtail on right ... not a good photo but want to share as I'd never have thought to see these two together in my small garden at the same time; it so lifts my spirits to watch them enjoying their morning. While I was attempting to take a photo of the recently eclosed Spicebush Swallowtail on the Stokesia bloom, the Pipevine Swallowtail flew onto another nearby bloom. Yeah, maybe I should have just beaten it to death with my shovel instead of trying to help it survive? One day it 'could' grow up to disturb my bulbs.....oh nooo! Here is a video of an olde guy in England and his Collared Doves. You can easily see the squared-off tails with all the white on them. For me, that's a good identifier for these birds. He has some things to say about them but I can't hear well enuf to know what it is. Just a guy and his bird friends . . . Now about the birds this olde guy has seen in his garden! I was out in the dahlias Saturday and frightened a Mountain Plover out of them! This garden is probably a mile from open water (unless you count some swimming pools ;o). It certainly isn't out in the open. There are not only houses and other buildings around but quite a few trees. I've never seen a plover in my gardens! Kildeer but not shorebirds. . . Aaannd! There is a family of hawks near this garden! Not too unusual but this is quite an urban setting and I can't identify the species. I've always thought of the most-likely hawks to be seen as being Sharp-shinned but these guys are smaller. Not as small as Merlins and with an Accipiter look to them . . . so, I'm kind of at a loss . . . (noisy critters, too :o)! Well more bad news. I looked through the hole and saw no activity and heard none so I opened and saw the last baby, previously alive, had died. I have no idea what happened to him. No trauma from what I could see and this afternoon I definitely saw him moving around in the hole. What in te world happened to my little baby? He was supposed to fly free today. I don't know that I want to clean out the house and try for another now. Mommy is out there flying around with her newly chosen mate and I wonder if she is heartbroken as I am? Again, what in the world happened to this last baby?
