Need help identifying bird

This bird was on my suet log feeder in Central Texas yesterday. I thought it was some kind of warbler but don't know for sure. Any ideas? Hope you are able to see the two pictures. I haven't posted on this forum before.

Looks to me like an Orange-crowned Warbler...although the black line that appears to be near the eye is deceiving. However, there are few warblers (especially the coloration of your bird) around this time of year, even in TX, but Orange-crowneds commonly winter in the southern states and do come to feeders occassionally.

Absolutely Lesser Goldfinch. By the way, I don't know how much time you spent looking at warbler pics, but you would have saved yourself that effort by noting the bill shape: warblers have much thinner bills. Bill shape and size is often a good clue to point you in the right direction; bright colour patterns you'll likely remember without trying, but the bill really needs to be looked at (unless we're talking about a toucan or spoonbill etc). I checked your MyPage, but didn't find your location. The only lapwing that frequents the US is the Northern Lapwing, but the bird in your photo more closely resembles a Southern Lapwing, from S. America

We camped at the Ortona Locks outside of Labelle last year. There was a pair of these Shrikes working our campsite every evening. For a small bird they were quite the predators, dragonflies and small lizards were on the menu and yes they did pin them on the small tree branches.

Thanks for the help. Can't tell for sure if that's what it is, but it could be from the pictures I saw. I took some pictures again today and maybe I can see the top of the head this time to see if there's any orange. He's fun to watch anyway. The only thing this one has that I haven't found in any pictures is like a necklace of black around his neck.

It looks like an Orange-crowned to me, incidently they rarely show the Orange crown.

Thank you both for your identification of the bird for me. Tonight I looked at some of my pictures real close up (including some I took today) and could barely see a little orange on the top of his head so am sure that it is the orange crowned warbler. Don't know if I've ever seen one before. We sometimes get the pine warbler.

I believe it is a Nashville Warbler. Maybe starting on its way north out of southern Texes :-) hope, hope! I really do think it is a female Nashville Warbler, its coloration and especially with the black legs.

Nashville Warbler has a full white eye ring, among other differences.

Yes, I see now upon further investigation (outside of my bird book). I guess I need a new book. I went to www.giffbeaton.com/warblers.htm and I totally agree with the Orange-crowned Warbler.
