Why do all the birds show up in the evening any way?

There's been a big drop off in birds lately. I can think of several reasons for this. The weather has been a lot nicer so they're probably finding food elsewhere. There's also an increase of hawks. I actually see not one, but 3 different hawks flying around at the same time. In the mean time, there's a sudden increase of squirrels. There's usually only 1 or 2 under the feeder, now there are like 6 or so. They seemed smaller than the usual customers so I am guessing that these are the next generation of nuisance.

While the finch feeder gets visitor throughout, the sunflower seed feeder sits unused until an hour before sunset. At this point a lot of birds show up and result in traffic jams. This is some sort of pit stop before retiring or are hawk activity lower before sunset?
