Did they really leave?

The HOSPs seem to have given up. After being shot at with 22s and BB guns, blasted with the hose and taken down by the Blues I think they have gone. Im pissed that I missed and didn't take any out, Im sure my problem will be worse next year. They do not usually stick around here. Last year was the first year they tried to nest here. I didn't miss that pair. This year there were 2 pair. I think there are so many natural cavities and other folks ratty nestboxes (on post at the dairy farm) where there is plenty of food my place is just not worth the effort. I am relieved for now, but I will keep a close ear out for more trouble.

probably not. I had a pair of hosp going in and out of the tres box. I got the VanErt trap from the basement and put it in the garage. (getting ready) I haven't seen them since LOL but I am sure they will be back when nesting season becomes more serious.

The population is growing where ever they come from so they are spreading out. Remember the first 3-4 years I never had a problem with them here at all. I need a better BB gun, this one does not shoot straight at all, it's a kids gun. Maybe some kind of real gun that I can shoot in the direction of the trading post or the neighbors through the woods. The 22 is too dangerous. I know I am going to have to thin this population growth myself. I couldnt even get Pastor to take his box off the tree, nobody around here cares.

thanks again for the help.i will leave them where they at now till spring.i know i should re pot them separate. i already did that with one.prune the roots of one and the rest of them is left alone to c if there any difference in the root development. so far i notice the caudex on the root prone one getting a lot fatter from the soil line and taper up.the non prune ones soil line caudex is like a knuckle little slimmer and then get fatter then taper thin. growth on root prune ones slowed down considerably.they took longer than expected to go back to somewhat normal.leaves kinda smaller than the unprune ones.i hope i didn't make that long.i tend to do that.

It was very interesting to learn of the pruning suggestions for RdR! I had completely forgotten that this spring I had given it a very hard pruning. This spring, the bush was about 3' tall with a lot of short canes coming up vertically through the middle of the plant. Further, it was extremely twiggy with a lot of little branches very tightly intertwined. I knew it was time for a major pruning and did just that, reducing the vertical canes to 3 or 4 and getting rid of the twiggy growth completely. Right now the bush looks great, including the foliage which is remarkably clean and the shape which is rounded and full at about 3'. I still think that the rain has contributed to the constant bloom this summer.

What did you repot them in? Most nurseries use some sort of soilless mix which is sterile, but contains no nutrients. They get around that by regular fertilizing. The same is true if that's what you use at home. The roses have to be on a regular fertilizing program. That's a big reason I personally prefer potting soil. Then if we get regular rains, the potted roses can survive on their own. BTW, I've never really been able to get a feel for Indigo's blackspot resistance. Most portlands get some form of it badly here. It's possible that is also being a contributing factor.

I will again explain how I did this, and what I used as a guide. My sans grew near my roll top desk, which is 4 feet 4 inches tall. I clipped the tips when they topped the desk, except for the four (4) exceptions that you see, that went a few weeks longer. I had thought I worked this out fairly logically, and rationally, but obviously not 'scientifically'... The broom is exactly 4 feet tall, and a popular, easily available brand. Please compare the height of ALL the leaves to the broom... The pot is 18 inches across to provide reference, and the broom, four feet tall. Too bad the tape, the camera, and the broom weren't more co-operative together! Please notice the symetrical height of the majority of the leaves. How does a fish in an aquarium 'know' to grow this big, and no more? They will fill up the available space, reguardless what you feed them. Sans will grow until they can't anymore (broken against an obstruction) and stop. The whole caboodle.

Everytime I curse those sparrows, my son says to buy him a bb gun... FUNNY, since trapping ALL my sparrows have gone away too?

have you tried the in box traps? They are so cheap and easy to use... this is my first year trapping and I've gotten 6... Sandra
