I have really pushed my plant out. I have planted some about 2 weeks ago. Zone number don't mean much EXCEPT for the LFD as an indicator You have to watch for the lows, on long term basis. Highs can be anything from 55F and up. But LOWS? My plants have seen many lows from 38F to 41F. Many gardener believe that under 45F is harmful. But to my experience ( for many years) tomatoes are tougher than most people think. My LOW limit is 38F and I have living and proven records. Anything lower than that I will cover my plants with things like a big pot and buckets inverted over them at night. One thing to consider is that the forecasted low lasts about 60 to 90 minutes, NOT all night long. To my surprise, under such cool conditions my plants are actually growing, not as rapidly though. I see some are growing branches and a few early ones have flowers. ( My fingers are not crossed yet at this point that those flowers will become fruits. ) I have more to plant out . I have even planted out some pepper recently. They are just hanging in there. WOW is not going to protect your plant against night lows. No way. Especially if it was a cloudy and overcast day before the night settles in. It can only keep your plant warmer during a cold SUNNY day so that your plant MAY grow slightly faster. YMMV

Beginning of a month here. Summer is out by Memorial day--I go patriotic stays until August first. August is the ACTUAL back to school month even though September is the "traditional", so put away the red/wht/blue and get out my fall apples. I am anxious for fall decor and change by August. After that I begin in October with monthly changes. The one exception being Lent. I have some lenten things that will trump whatever month it is. A pet peve is the annuals are all still great...and will be through September, most likely. Mums are in the stores NOW and if I purchased them they will be done and gone by October/Nov when I WANT them to replace my outside plants.

Frances, Too early is when the ground is still solidly frozen. You'll break your back and shovel both then. The second time, is when It is too early in the AM, as before sunrise, when the street lights are still on. In the dark you will need someone to hold your lantern or flashlight, and any early rising or shift working neighbors who might see you, could call the cops. All kidding aside, this is the ideal time to move roses, when they are dormant. Get your new location hole dug first. Then dig your rose, getting as much soil ball as you can. Do it carefully, and your rose in its new home will wake up like nothing happened, not skipping a beat. Treat it like any freshly planted rose bush. Backfill with light, fluffy soil and water in generously. You cannot fail. Moses

I also agree with Jason. The figs in the Garage woke up before the one outside because it was warmer inside garage than outside (Don't forget ground temps are generally warmer in fall than air temps and colder in Spring). To be honest, light doesn't matter much before leafing out... it's the Temp that tells the plant to wake up or stay dormant and obviously outside is colder than in a garage.... Plus, the Sun can warm up soil in a pot quicker than the whole "ground"
