Masbustelo, if I plant peas too early here they just rot. Our soil tends to be both cold and waterlogged for weeks in early spring. I guess it's drier where you are stuffradio; WCS's mid-Feb recommendation usually doesn't work for me, and as for "as soon as the ground can be worked" .... baloney! Maybe in Victoria or the lower mainland but apparently local conditions trump all. I have been pre-sprouting successfully for a couple of years (have to plant them gently!) but I don't know for sure that I'm getting any benefit; maybe those years they'd have sprouted in the ground anyway. I suppose I could run some side-by-side week-by-week tests but a) I'm too lazy/disorganised and b) we eat too many fresh peas so there's no big surplus of seed left to play with. Love this idea! I have some old flannel nightgowns that don't fit or are worn in places but have hung on to them thinking "I can do something with these." Now I know what! I'm a long time lurker but seldom post. Love this warm & welcoming forum. Susan

With the exception of a floating floor, floors are either... Installed first so the flooring goes under the cabinets (preferred method) -or- Installed after the cabinets are put in BUT a plywood or similar subfloor is installed beneath the cabinets at the same thickness of the finished flooring (this is also done with floating floors) - so you need to know +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ From an older post (applies to all flooring materials, not just wood): Ideally, the floors go down first, before any cabinets are installed. Whether the wood is installed throughout, though, depends on the floor. Is it a floating floor? If it is, then you will not be able to install cabinets on top of it. Instead, you will have to install some other material that raises the floor under the cabinets to the same height as the finished floor. Do not install the cabinets lower than the flooring - it will trap your appliances (Refrigerator, DW, range) in a hole and will make it difficult to move them. Of particular concern is any appliance in an "alcove" - like a DW or Refrigerator - with the DW the most crucial b/c the counter is installed on top of the DW with little or no vertical "wiggle room". Note: Since you can usually see several inches under the Refrigerator and Range, install the wood flooring under those appliances if at all possible. If it's not a floating floor, then installing the wood throughout is the best option b/c it allows for more flexibility and/or changes later, if desired, as well gives a more seamless look - especially under the Range and Refrigerator where you can usually see several inches underneath them. Some people don't install wood flooring under the cabinets b/c they think they'll save money in material costs. However, the extra work needed to install two different surfaces and the extra measuring/cuts will often eliminate that savings b/c of additional labor costs.

If the grasses are hardy for your zone, it makes no difference to cut them while the soil is frozen or to wait until it thaws. It is the activity of the grass and when it starts to grow that will determine the timing. And cutting back or not cutting back has no impact on whether the grass will increase in size (spread). Grasses growing wild have no one to cut them back and they will develop properly. Cutting back just improves the appearance in the garden and reduces self seeding on those so inclined. The Calamagrostis (Karl Foerster, Avalanche) are cool season grasses and will start growing soon so cutting back now before they are in active growth is advised. The flame grass is a warm season grass and won't start growing until temperatures warm up in mid to late spring so you can wait longer for those if you like.
