Bluebird babies in NVA

I had a nest last spring but the birdhouse ended up on the ground and no sign of eggs or chicks. This year I confirmed at least one chick in the nest this week as I turned the house towards the sun and a chick opened his mouth like he was ready to eat! Cool... How long before they fledge? Will there be any evidence of them leaving the nest?

Read up on sialis.org...it is full of information on Bluebirds and other cavity nesting birds. Bluebirds typically fledge 16-19 days after hatching. Do not open the nestbox once the babies are 12-13 days old to prevent premature fledging. Please make sure your nestbox is mounted on a slick metal pole with a predator baffle to prevent predators from getting to the nestlings. Houses mounted on trees/fences/wooden posts or un baffled poles are an easy meal for predators like raccoons, squirrels, cats, snakes etc.

I am new to bluebirds...I put up an ornamental bird house never dreaming blue birds would move in...now I believe they are laying eggs. I have read that after fledling you are suppose to clean the nest out. This is an ornamental house and never meant for real birds. What should I do?

Such cuties! If you go to Sialis.org, it shows pics of what babies look like each day. That way, you could get a close estimate. Looks like there's a fecal sac in there too. I'm sure parents have removed it by now. Wishing you & your blues the best of luck!

I was mowing the lawn in my backyard and could smell a foul odor when I would walk near my deck. I knew something was dead back there. I was surprised to see on my deck stairs three dead baby bluebirds right near each other. What would cause this? Was this one of the parents throwing the birds out of their own nest or an attack by another bird to just kill them? Thanks.
