Depends where you are located. Are you in town or on the outskirts? For the most part Bluebirds are not in town so to speak but that all depends on the town itself as far as how big the lots are and how much open land there is. I know in town here closer to the edge of town I do hear Bluebirds. Is your birdhouse easily visable from the air or trees? Putting up a bluebird feeder will not attract Bluebirds since Bluebird need to be trained to come to a feeder so you need to actually have Bluebirds around before you can start feeding them. Bluebirds primarily eat insects, in Winter or cooler months or if bugs are scarce they will eat suet or berries though. But during nesting season they pretty much stick to bugs. Pretty much putting up a house and waiting is what you need to do to attract Bluebird so you are doing things right, especially if you have read and followed the advice on silais on how to properly install a nestbox. Have you had any interest in your birdhouse from other birds? Have you seen or heard any Bluebirds in your area?

Its all location with with bluebirds here in RI they are just on the edge of city limits like many communities they have made a strong come back. They need no less than three acres. And short grass. If your site is not prime find someone
in your family that has open space and give the house as a gift. The birds love
a nice open golf club. A farm yard (house placed as far as possible from barns)
that favor sparrows. Other wise you will host mostly swallows and other native
songbirds. Bluebirds shy away from very developed area's because of sparrows
that kill them. Ray

Someone on this forum suggested I tie a blue cloth to the top of the box because Bluebirds are so territorial they will come down to investigate. That was the first year I put up a box for the Bluebirds, and they did indeed come and check it out. They did not nest here that year, but at least they knew my box existed. They nested here the next year though, so it may be worth a try. Good luck.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. My property is situated across the street from the St. Clair River, on the edge of town but I only have about an acre. There is a lot of open space between houses, though. Last season, I thought I saw a pair but they didn't nest. I believe sparrows had attempted to nest last season but I evicted them. I knew it wasn't bluebirds because of the type of nest. Kendra, I actually bought little blue flags to put on the top of the nesting boxes. I'm hoping.

kris, I have always had nesting Eastern Bluebirds in my yard, and I have never had more than a one acre lot. I have also always lived in subdivisions filled with other houses, trees, busy streets, and so on. It has been my impression that they do seem to prefer housing that is mounted on posts in open spaces. Then again, I do have a house that is mounted on a T-post and is within 3 feet of a Bradford Pear tree. My Bluebird pair has just completed their nest in that house. So, I think that you are doing all that you can do to attract them. Now, it's just a waiting game. You might post a pic of your site to see if any of the experts here have any suggestions for you. The house I lived in before this one was in a subdivision with our yard not 50 feet from the parking lot of a large Target/Kohls shopping area and the bluebirds didn't care. Our lot was only about 1/2 acre, but with nice mown grass and many mature hardwoods. I would try to make sure there is a tree nearby and something else to perch on while they are looking for insects -- mine like to perch on the overhead wires and the top of our swingset.
