'Drainage area' in Zone 8b - what to plant?

pinkzinnia

Does anyone have suggestions for some good flowering plants for a "drainage area" in zone 8b (SW of Austin)? The area is part of a 3.75 acre housing lot, and is mostly sunny but does have some shade. Hummingbird and butterfly-attracting plants would be very nice. We'd prefer plants that would grow easily from seed, since it's a large area and we don't want to break the bank while adding plants...

So far I've come up with cardinal flower as a possibility, but only for the shadier area...

Thanks!
