I'm also growing them. For the second year in a row in our case. Our plants are huge and have probably several hundred fruits on them. Last year's were the same way. There's obviously a problem somewhere, but maybe yours will set more fruit over time.

This is my 3rd year. Mine always start out slow, but really take off later and I actually almost get tired of them by October.

The first time I grew Black Cherry was the year that TGS offered it, having been bred by Vince Sapp, now deceased, former husband of Linda, who continues to run Tomato Growers Supply.

I loved it from the get go and I'd have to check to see how many years ago that was and it always is a huge plant with loads of fruit. So no, it is not normal for it to have low yield.

Hydrangea, you and I have kind of talked before and we're only about an hour apart so depending on your seed source and how you grow your tomatoes it seems to me that they should do just fine in the Albany area.

Another black cherry that I also love is called Kazachka ( Cossack Woman), a Russian commercial variety, not many commercial sources for it yet, but Lee at J and L Gardens offers it at his website, seed from me. Also available from the annual SSE Yearbook, for SSE members only.

Thanks for the responses. Maybe I will get more fruit later on. I wish I had planted them in my community garden plot. I planted them at home where they are getting about 4 hours of full sun, vs. my community garden that probably gets about 8 hours. I'm wondering if maybe they just don't get enough sun where they are. Anyway, I will wait for them and see what they do. I read so many mixed reviews on them I wasn't sure I'd like them but was surprised at how tasty they were.

I'm in zone 5, Chicago area, and planted out around Mother's Day. I've probably harvested a few dozen Black Cherries. Not as prolific as some of my other cherries, but they're also a bit larger. There are a lot of unripe fruit on my plant. We just love this one.

This is my second year growing black cherries, scrumptious, almost taste like grapes. When I bought the plant the dealer gave me a tip; he said to cut the bottom leaves off the plant so as to be able to plant it deeper. I did and have a great crop.

My black cherry plant has tons of fruit and flowers. It was a bit of a slow start, don't know if the heat set it back,but generally it's a very prolific plant.

4 hours of sun is rough for any tomato. You're right, 8 would have been much better. Our Black Cherry gets almost full sun, and I hate to say it, but it looks like we might get several hunderd tomatoes from it.

Mine had tough skins last year. They were fabulous the first year I grew them. I have a couple of plants this year, we'll see if they are good...I do like the flavour a lot.

Ours were planted out a bit late this year and we are just now seeing our first ripening fruit:)))

As others stated, they are a bit slow to get going, but will produce great! We have been growing them for years, it is our favorite!
