mom lost interest on day 14

We had a bluebird nesting in our box with a nestcam.. As the days continued to tick down to hatching day we were constantly watching the eggs via recording on our cam. After day 14 mom left and just sat on the fence.. she never went in the box again for over 2 days.. so we finally decided that the eggs must be infertile... and when i was cleaning up the eggs and nest, i had to look and inside the eggs were almost fully grown baby birds in the eggs!!!

Why would the mom leave the nest so close to birth?

Can an egg sit without no incubation or being turned, etc for DAYS and still hatch? I had read that if a mom doestn visit the nest once in over 8 hours , then the nest is abandoned.. but now im wondering....

If this has ever happened to anyone else, please give us some advice/ solutions..

Thanks
