Home made bird feeder

Hi, just came across this fantastic bird feeding activity, its a pine cone feeder and looked really easy to make. I tried it with my children and the results were great, the cone attracted many species of birds to the garden and we enjoyed the making them, have a look at the recipe here.

Thank you for sharing us this helpful information on how to make a home made bird feeder. I will try to make it with my nephew this coming weekend. I'm sure that it will be a great bonding for us and at the same time it will attract birds in our backyard. Thank you again for sharing this.

Thank you; I just checked it out. I have everything to make them but can't since the squirrels here are terrible to suet in any form. They "stole" my suet cages. Frustrated, I recently bought something callled a "suet palace" from amazon, put it up and they were still trying to get to the suet! They can't now though but my faithful red-bellied woodpecker doesn't know where the suet went. Smaller birds get to it easily.

Thanks all for all the nice compliments! Syllabus--I got the sheet of corrugated metal at a place called Sutherland's. It's like a Home Depot or Lowes. It comes in managable sized sheets apprx. 2-3' wide & 6-8' long. Not that expensive if I remember right. And a little goes a long way. Concretenprimroses-I have no idea how many of those high dollar bird houses they sold. But $150 was the low end...they went up from there. And I have had my go at selling my creations. One of those been there, done that kinda things. I sold at local farmer's markets and at craft shows...soon became alot of hassle for me to HAVE to make stuff to keep up. I lost the FUN part of it. Have taken the last couple years off. I will use a different approach if I decide to ever sell things again. Thanks again all. I will post any more treasures I find this coming weekend.

I collect these, too. You will find nice, handmade ones on ebay if you do a search for "primitive birdhouse." They are not cheap (and I have not asked any if they will barter) but they are sturdy and lovely! Best to you and yours, Diane

Hi Maureen, How are you. We havent talked for quite a while. I have a suet feeder with a suet cake in it. Its got a copper colored top and has 3 little glass beads that hang off the bottom. I hung it up for a month and it was completely ignored! Lol! I guess I will just stick to regular birdfeeders. If you are still looking for one just let me know. its great talking to you again! Darla

Hi! Your feeder is neat, especially the way you've hung the tray on the bottom. The only thing I can think of, relative to your question about why birds aren't using that feeder, is that at this time of year it's not the feeder - there are so many insects, seeds, buds, etc. out there that haven't been available to the birds before spring, and I know that's where most of our birds are getting their nourishment. Even the gray catbirds that have been in the garden and birdbath haven't been visiting our fruit/jelly feeder. I've actually taken everything down except the nyjer feeder, and I keep the birdbaths filled and clean because all the birds come to those no matter what. On the other hand, we have a pair of goldfinches that visits our nyjer feeder every day at about 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., like clockwork. And more goldfinches than just those two take advantage of the feeder as well. So that feeder will stay up. This will work out - you could leave your feeder up and wait and see, birds may suddenly see it and use it. Good luck - Donna

Some other easy ideas kids like --

Tie peanuts on a tring. You need at least two in a pod so you have a narrow spot for the string and you can tie several on a length of string. You can hang them anywhere, but it's especially fun if you have a "squirrel proof" feeder. Blue jays and woodpeckers love them and the squirrels will try to figure out how to get to them.

Drill large holes (using a small circle saw bit) into a piece of dropped tree branch and fill with a mixture of peanut butter, cornmeal and birdseed. .

LOVE this idea! My grandchildren are always enthralled by the activity at my bird feeders. This is a fantastic project to do with them and I like the other ideas that've been shared as well. I'm printing the recipe and making note of the other ideas. We don't have a lot of pine cones around here though; sounds like a good reason to take a field trip!

In extreme cold I just smear peanut butter directly on the tree trunks. That way I can spread "the joy" without further equipment. Sometimes it looks like a Christmas tree out there with Red-bellies, Blue jays & Goldfinches on the trees.
