My sky blue female Bluebird is back again

third year in a row now and they don't overwinter here. Second year now that I didn't have to train the Blues to the mealworm feeder. I hope she is a little better with her fledgllings though this year, she pretty much ignores them once they fledge and the mortality rate of the fledglings is much lower than other Blues I have had in the yard in years previous to her being here. But she is a unique color, hopefully she has a good mate again this year, last years was a great daddy Blue! I know it is a different one cause he isn't sure what the mealworm feeder is yet, watched her go in but he will just flutter around it. Here is a pic of her from today....

That is just so awesome. Not just to have the same female return, but to absolutely know it is her because of her unique color. I'm certain I have a different pair this year because they are very shy around me and don't come to the mealworm feeder when I call them. They won't go near it for about half an hour after I fill it. Also, this is the first pair I've ever had that built their nest out of short pine needles. In the past they have always used the long pine needles or grass.

Wow what a beautiful picture! I had a female that laid white eggs a few years ago and was hoping she would be back but I guess they can go back to blue eggs again? So I'm hoping I'm hosting her, otherwise I have a hard time telling everyone apart, I have to go by mannerisms or history (or herstory!) or whatever.

After having the plexi on for a half hour at about 1:00 pm, only one bluebird was able to get through the hole... all these blues (9) are from broods that were hatched here this summer, I presume, so they are all around 6-7 months old. They don't seem to be able to fit through the 1.5" plexi hole. Maybe they are too fat? LOL. I could make the holes a little larger for them to fit through... what do you think? Its like they can't get their wings to fit. I don't want them to injure themselves trying to get food. I am sure its just that they are not used to going through a hole like this... to get food. The one who made it went in through a side hole (where the tape is) and then out through the end - solid. What to do?

I discourage the wrens. I take any sticks they put into a box away as quickly as possible. From the information I've read on the Sialis website, if you let wrens nest, you will soon be overrun with wrens. The wrens will poke holes in the Bluebird's eggs, or toss out their chicks. So if you're trying to get Blues, I would certainly discourage the wrens.

It was definitely sticks. And, this morning our "Mom" returned. At least I'm convinced it's our original "Mom" as she looks identical. I'll know better when I can get some good pictures and if I can identify her. I'm pretty sure you are right as we've seen the babies bathing in the bird bath having a blast so they are still around! I was so excited to see her. And, I know we they don't have emotions, but do we really know for sure?!? :) We'll check on the other house and remove the sticks again. We've got lots of bird books and are pretty sure it is a House Wren. Plus my husband knows just about every bird, plant, tree, bug, etc. on the planet -- and probably off as well. I'm just a newbie!

I have no idea if Bluebirds do this or not. But I can tell you that my pet birds (Gouldian Finches) do this all the time. It's like the female just can't resist starting another brood before she's even done with the first. So I certainly think it is possible that Bluebirds could do this too. I would also like to add that none of the eggs laid before the young fledged ever hatched. I don't think baby birds can incubate eggs properly.

She sure is pretty. I have also noticed some year's blues are better or worse parents than previous ones. I have also had returning blues, who will go right to the feeder the first time I put mealworms out.
