Update on my injured female and her fledglings....

For those of you that didn't read about it, back on the night of July first two days after the fledging of six baby Blues we had a very bad windstorm blow through around 11PM. Winds were 50-70mph, it was bad out there! The next morning I noticed our Momma Blue was hurt as she was holding her leg up. As far as I can tell, the back toe on her left foot was broken, not sure about the ankle though as it has now been 12 days and while she is using the leg and putting her foot down for balance she isn't using any of the toes yet and it still seems tender from what I can tell. It is obvious that the back toe is broke but I am not sure if pain from that is still hindering the use of her front toes or if it is more of an ankle break but the foot is not floppy at all. Here is a photo of her from last weekend, just over a week from the injury. Oh and you may notice that this female is a little differently colored than most Bluebirds, she is more of a sky blue, very pretty. She is the same female that was here last year.

She has gone on and built a crude nest (what can you expect with an injured foot) and now is incubating four eggs. I beleive we lost one of the fledglings in that storm that injured Mom as when I saw them a few days later there were only five. Last Friday there were still five and then Saturday there were only three. No clue what happened to the other two, they spent most of Saturday in the neighbors yard. There is a Coopers Hawk around too so it could have gotten them. So we have only three left from the first nesting, all boys. One interesting thing about them is that two of them are colored more like mom than the normal blue. Thankfully we have a very very good Dad this year and he has been feeding both the fledglings and now Mom too. Momma Blue stops feeding the babies shortly after fledgling (she did this last year too) as she is concentrating on her next nesting. The injury sidelined her for about a week though. The fledglings have been coming to the mealworm feeder with Dad since about Monday of this week, not going into it at all but following Dad there. Won't be long before they figure it out as they are eyeing it up pretty good.

Here are some pics from the last few days....
