Comments (19)A quick follow-up...I ended up going with my original set-up and the guys are here installing it now. Based on recommendations here, I inquired about the XP-19. I could have paired the XP-19 with a G60-110 (vs. G60-090) for $575 more (and just barely qualify for the tax credit). I ended up staying with my original set-up based on the recommendation of the installer and the fact that my wife always seems to be cold in the house. Figured that a straight gas furnace vs. HP would provide a more comfortable heat for her (G61 would have been up to $1,500+ more). While I may be sacrificing cost on the heating end, the EER/SEER of the system I am getting are higher so some offsetting benefit should be reaped on the cooling end which in DC area can be significant. Not any easy decision, but no looking back now. Another point of reference, I narrowed my bidders to two installers. The first gave the initial $7,495 bid. The other initially came in at $9,300. Second bidder eventually matched the $7,495 before first offered to throw in an AprileAire 600A for free to seal the deal. Felt more comfortable going with first installer as he didn't have to whack $1,800 off job and may have been inclined to cut corners. For $4,995 when rebates and tax credits are taken into account, I feel like I have gotten a fairly good bang for my buck. Agreed?...See MoreTwo Females? Am I crazy?
Comments (18)As Mazer said, it all depends on the personalities of the dogs involved. I had three females for many years. The first, Sarah, was a very submissive adult when I adopted her. Then I adopted a very young female puppy, Moonie, who Sarah treated very kindly and motherly. Moonie matured into an EXTREMELY alpha female and spent the rest of their lives together bullying and intimidating Sarah. I also adopted another adult female, Bootsers, who was a very middle-of-the-road type, happy go lucky, neither submissive nor dominant. Although Moonie also bossed Bootsers, Boots took it all in stride and learned how to appease the Moondog by cleaning her ears. Sarah passed, after which I adopted Tasha, a very young and EXTREMELY dominant puppy. Tasha tried to get Moonie to be her mother, but Moonie was completely intolerant of her puppy enthusiasm and kept putting her firmly in her place. Bootsers took Tasha under her wing and served as a fine surrogate mother during Tasha's puppyhood, though Moonie was always the disciplinarian. Knowing how dominant Tasha's personality was, I was very nervous about how she and Moonie would interact as Tasha matured, esp. since Moonie was extremely old and had virtually no mobility without assistance. To my amazement, even as Tasha bossed every other living creature on this farm, she NEVER for a single moment questioned Moonie's authority or alpha dog status. When Moonie would bark or snap at her from her bed, Tasha would flop over on her back and beg forgiveness. It truly was remarkable. All of my old girls are gone now, and Tasha is my only female. There is no conceivable way Tasha would ever tolerate another alpha dog in her territory now, and I would never subject a submissive female to her relentless bullying. She might be able to coexist with a happy go lucky female like Bootsers, but I wouldn't risk it. She has her two tolerant doggie brothers to keep in line, and that's enough. Comments (7)I agree with all of the above, and commend you on your decision to adopt instead of buying a puppy. I volunteer at a shelter, and ours, along with the majority of them, will take a dog back if things do not work out. Though it is sad to see them returned, we much prefer that they go to the right home. Also, my dog is a male and he gets along well with both sexes. Follow the above advice and also read up on introducing a new dog to your home and other pets, the more you know, the better. You are the top dog in the pack, and you must set the ground rules! If things are not perfect in the beginning, don't give up...sometimes the dogs have to work things out, figure out where they stand with one another...but if neither is too dominant, then you probably won't have any major issues. Good Luck, and thanks for adopting a shelter dog!! Jen...See Moreeva1429
