Problem installing Wren house

I got a cedar wren house but I have no idea where to put it. It has an S hook on top and is obviously designed to hang from a tree branch. However, I live in the woods and there aren't many trees around with low hanging branches that I could reach even with a ladder. The only trees with branches I could reach have thin branches that could possibly break in high winds. I don't know how to modify it so I can nail it to a tree. Any suggestions on what to do?

I put up a couple of wren houses last summer, two different ways: one I did hang on a too-thin branch, and it did fall down this fall! The other I put up on a pole away from most activity, and wrens did make a nest in there and we enjoyed watching them go back and forth (Carolina wrens).

One of these houses did come with a small piece of wood for mounting the house on a tree - it was screwed into the back of the house, with some showing above the roof. Then you would screw the upper part into the tree. I don't know about advice as to the placement of a house in a tree, though.

There is a great website for cavity nesting birds www.sialis.org it is a Bluebird site but is usefull for all cavity nesters. Bluebirders would NOT want House Wrens around. Hope this helps.

My husband thinks if we plug up the hole, the wrens will go to the other bluebird box so we'll just keep taking out the twigs. She builds a perfect circle of twigs morning and night. As I walk back from destroying her work if just look over and say, "Sorry little bird." I know it's for the best. I've figured out a way to stop feeling guilty about it; I just have my husband do it! Plus I keep picturing the destroyed bluebird eggs I've seen from what the Wren's can do. Thank you all for your advice. Now we just need our Blue's to start building!

Nina, I finally have my FIRST bluebird egg of the season and just 2 weeks ago I did find a few sticks in that box. I don't think the HOWR were serious about the box, just trying to claim as many as they can on their journey to take over every nest box in the USA. Anyway, I had a wren guard on that box while the BHNU were in it and they all fledged safely. It was after they fledged and before the blues started building that I found the sticks but my plan is to add a wren guard tomorrow. I'm worried since I know the wrens have found that entrance hole at least the one time but I still think the blues will be better off (stand a chance) with the guard added.

Hi Konrad, Kinda sad to lose your RBNH nest... but this is nature at work I guess. Yes, we lost 1 bluebird egg to a HOWR 2 seasons ago. We saw him fly to and into the nest box, and come out with the pierced egg still impaled on his beak! We were waving our arms and shouting at him, as he dropped it on the ground and flew off. It all happened in 30 seconds or less. We discouraged him with a squirt gun for days and the parent blues dived bombed him mercilessly whenever he came near. He finally stopped coming around, and I'm happy to say the other 3 eggs hatched and fledged successfully. What type of birds are you trying to attract? What style nest boxes do you have? Please don't let house wrens nest in your boxes. You could hang your wren house on a shepherd's hook, not far from your residence so that you could enjoy seeing the wrens using it.

I have mine on a shepherds hook farther back in my yard where there's not too much activity, and last summer a pair nested there. They were so comical, if I'd stepped anywhere near their house, they would squack at me and try to chase me away. I believe they were carolina wrens because they had the white stripe on their head.
