Is August a good time to take cuttings?

I was readinga southern gardening book by Barbara Pleasant which has things to do for each month. I found this book at Half Price books and it does have some good information even though it is more geared towards the southeastern part of the U.S. Anyway, she mentioned that August is a really good time to take cuttings of plants from the garden, but to let them root in a shady spot in the yard. Anyone ever try this in August? I am tempted to do this next weekend so I have plenty of plants for our plant swap in October.
