Which annuals are good to take cuttings from?

IÂd like to keep some indoors for the winter, mostly things or varieties that are too hard to find or too expensive. I tried taking cuttings a few weeks ago of some but they all rotted: not sure what I did wrong.

Pentas, Coleus, Sweet potato vine, silver veil, licorice plant, green and white ivy, angel wing begonias.

Does the technique vary between any of these? Root in water or in soil with rooting hormone?
