Taking Cuttings from Marsh Marigold

Unsure as to what is the best way to take cuttings from the Marsh Marigold. Please give me some of you highly prized knowledge.

Incidentally I have bought a preform waterfall for the stream area. It has been placed in situe and is looking good. What is the best way to age it quickly? I have used yoghurt on stone, does it work as well on plastic?

I just bought a waterfall for my pond that needs ageing, I'll keep an eye on this thread.

Age quickly is a realtive term but yogurt etc is the way to encourage lichen etc. Re the marigold "sow fresh seeds or divide clumps in late summer" I doubt its a plant from which cuttings will take.
If you want seed I will have loads later in the year.

Hi Again Beatrice: I say yes to all three, or if you want to plant just one that's fine too. I put water hyacinth and water lettuce in my settlement pond where the frogs hang out. They love to hide between the plants, then when a bug flies buy: "bam" dinner has arrived!!! The only problem: as the season passes the wh/wl get larger and I don't see the frogs anymore. I just hear them. I have raccoons who visit my pond and the plants provide hiding places for the frogs to take cover. I have lilies in my top pond, but the frogs seem to like the wh/wl better. However, all the tadpoles I found dead this spring were in the top pond by the water lilies. They didn't go into the deeper water and froze to death. Oh well, that's Mother Nature making sure only the strong survive. Good luck with whatever plants you decide to grow. Jenny

Do Marigolds like extremely moist soil? Soil moisture levels are difficult to describe in this format because the words moist, dry, damp, wet, etc. all mean different things to different folks. I would say that marigold seeds , like most all seeds and especially the larger ones, prefer thoroughly wetted soil. But to many that might mean dripping wet and that is not what I mean. So all I can tell you is how we do it. The potting mix, regardless of its make-up, is soaked until sopping wet in large buckets/containers. That may take hours and even some stirring to insure it all gets wet depending on the mix you are using. Then it is picked out by the handfuls and hand squeezed, until it quits dripping, then lightly packed into the cells or trays or whatever and very lightly pressed into place. Seeds put in place and lightly covered with more of the damp mix, misted and the tray moved to the germination tables. The soil surface of all the trays on the germination tables are then kept uniformly damp (not wet but no color contrast) by light misting as needed. We NEVER fill trays with dry mix. If you buy those prefilled ones then dump it all out and soak it first and then refill the cells. Soaking of most any seeds is not required and if you pre-soak and than plant in too dry a mix they just shrivel and die. So the issue isn't the moisture of the seeds but the moisture level of the mix. Ditto morz8 on the Hyponex. Plain old Jiffy mix is even better than it is. Dave PS: I have some super old vermiculite and am afraid to use it, is it better than peat moss? Can't really compare them as two different purposes but take the old V and soak it well in some boiling water (just pour it over it). Let it sit till it cools, drain well spread it out to dry and then mix it in with your Hyponex using a ratio of 2 parts Hyponex to 1 part of vermic. THis is not ideal in any way but if Hyponex is all you have it will help some.

I would wait until the flower pods dry and split open, personally. Let Mother Nature do the work for you! Yes, yellow flag iris is very invasive. If you deadhead it faithfully, it shouldn't be a problem. The seeds float, and can float "downstream", which is why they're a problem. I just dug all my yellow flag up and put them on the compost pile.

Hi Ann I suspect what you have is not marsh marigold, but Ranunculus ficaria (aka LESSER CELANDINE, CELANDINE BUTTERCUP) which is considered an invasive wetland plant. I too have had my yard and garden beds invaded by this innocent looking little monster. It is incredibly hard to get rid of... but one thing I have discovered - you need to dig it up and remove the little tuber or potato like thing that it grows from. If you do not, that will divide and you will have tons of them the next spring. I resorted to using Round-Up and a paint brush to paint the leaves of them where they have gotten wedged inbetween the eyes of some hostas and irises. In the lawn I am just spraying them and will reseed when I know they are dead. You also need to be cautious about disposal of them. Do not put them into a compost bin and do not toss them in a trash dumpster or can. They can survivg a long long time out of the ground living off the little tuber thing and it doesn't help to contribute to the spread of them. If I am digging them, I put them in a plastic bag and give them a squirt of herbicide just to be sure they are dead and then they go in the trash. It comes up in winter, giving it a head start over most native spring wildflowers. Control: It is not yet known whether digging is effective - the small reproductive corms break off very easily. Try digging (1) before the plants flower. Otherwise, use Rodeo (10 or 11), preferably in February to protect native plants, frogs, and salamanders which become active in March. I am sure that I just let mine get bigger and don't really take cuttings, but when I have repotted each year I just put them in a bigger pot, Occasionally to take cuttings I have just split them away from the main plant with a little bit of root on. I don't plant anything in soil of any kind. Just in gravel. So you could always give it a try. Isn't yours flowering now though Steve?, you wouldn't want to start messing about with it at the moment unless it is really overgrown. Mine has just fallen into the deepend of the pond I think it was the wind but luckily it ended up the right way up. I wonder if it will be okay at 2ft deep or if I need to bring it back up onto the shelf. Anyone let me know please.

Marigold is flowering really well and growing like crazy, hence I would like to take a few cuttings to "thin out" the plant. Would like to put flowers in other areas of garden but don`t know if the marigold will survive in well watered soil ie:- next to waterfall. Would like to know how to add photo`s to messages as above. It would aid in showing certain areas a little more closely.

Just divide the clump up. Cuttings wouldn't work with marsh marigold. Can't advise on 2 ft depth. Mine is growing in soil in 6 inches of water. I think they would be alright next to waterfall as long as they never dry out.

I think I've seen "yogurt-aging" work on artificial/plastic materials, but not as well as on porous/rough materials like plant pots... if the texture is fairly "rough" it will probably work well. If not, it's worth a try anyway! Well, I suppose you could paint it with a sand and PVA mixture or something, or some kind of spray-on textured stuff (if such a thing exists).

Me too, as Sean says.. I left a smallish pot which had fallen 'right side up', but it rotted. I also divide the clump to get more plants. I divided at wrong time too, in full flower, but as I divided into two fairly large clumps it didn't even wilt a bit.

I hear you can buy spray paint that gives a rough stone texture, but I haven't seen where to buy it. My waterfall is a black plastic jobby that really needs 'natralising'

Thanks Sean and Linda, I have lifted it back up. It just seems a funny thing that if it is in water up to it's leaves when it's in the shallows what is the difference if it's in water covering a few leaves on the bottom. Anyway I don't suppose I will know because I have brought it back up on to the shelf. A juvenile frog and 2 large frogs jumped out of it so I guess they had enjoyed it being on the bottom for the day.
