No one's answering, so I will. If you put out food for birds, there is really little to do to restrict which species comes to your offerings. Bluebirds and Mockingbirds do not eat the seeds that cardinals and finches do; hopefully you have berry producing bushes and trees that attract and feed them. You can try to offer safflower, which I understand cardinals love, and no one else does. But even then, other birds may develop a taste for safflower. Consider planting native flowers that produce seeds that birds will eat, as well as other natural foods. Good luck. (I'm sure I will be corrected here : )

meek? OK. Last year there was a lovely woodpecker nest in a tree hollow in my yard not 50 feet from the back deck. We watched them feeding their babies hoping to see them finally take flight. The starlings found it. They would come in groups of ten or twenty and harass the woodpeckers literally harrying them dive bombing the nest to get the bird watching the nest to come out and defend. When it did others of the starlings would charge the nest. Eventually they had killed the baby woodpeckers and destroyed the nest and driven the parents away. They ate the baby woodpeckers. This is typical behavior for starlings. Starlings were imported by a deeply deranged man who was infatuated with Shakespeare and just absolutely had to import every bird mentioned in the bard's work to the new continent.

You need to add a hole reducer to the box, probably asap in hopes mama dee can begin incubating if she has laid her last egg. I think the bluebird site (sialis.org) has instructions on how to make one or you can order on-line.

The bird in her photo is definitely a European Starling, and Starlings commonly travel in large, noisy flocks, however it is very easy to confuse European Starlings with Grackles because both species exhibit the same noisy flocking habits and aggressive natures. To make identification even more difficult European Starlings & Grackles often flock together and in some instances they even nest in large group settings. Both European Starlings and Common Grackles are problematic to people because they will often exploit small openings the siding, soffits and fascia of our structures to nest in attics or wall cavities. When I was kid I lived on a dairy farm and our old farmhouse had redwood plank siding. One season so many grackles and starlings got into the siding that our entire house was infested with bird lice. To clear the mess we had to strip the siding off the house, clean all the straw, twigs and other nesting materials out of the wall cavities and the entire house had to be fumigated to kill the lice. I have often seen flocks of Starlings and Grackles land on a freshly planted field and the flock would cover an entire acre or more.
