Comments (7)Since my last posting, I've moved to a bigger yard and have once again experimented with BOP's. This time I planted on an east facing block wall with afternoon shade. Between the block wall and palm trees around them, they have doubled in size and have been blooming. It is possible to grow these in Las Vegas. This is year 3 that they have been in the ground in the Providence area of Las Vegas....See Moregiant bird of paradise
Comments (3)Giant BOP's are sold as a tropical foliage plant in places like Home Depot and the like. They don't tell you that they have to get VERY large to flower nor do they tell you that the large white and steel blue flowers are very nasty/messy things oozing a slime and bloom right against the trunk. I've never saw one flowering that had a trunk less than three feet tall and it takes many years to get to that size. If you just want a large foliage plant indoors, then they'll do okay with enough light....See MoreDoes Bird of Paradise need 7 leaves.....
Comments (4)Sjn, hi there, mine is fast outgrowing its pot and is screaming out for a bigger one so much so that the soil is ending up on the g/h bench as roots are pushing it higher and higher! Seems it has really taken off this season as its now growing 3 more leaves having put out five earlier this year. Also it split into three 'fans' of leaves instead of just the one. Pulled off several lower leaves as they have aged and were splitting away from the base. It was a weedy little £1 plant with 3 tiny leaves on a 'reject' trolley at a DIY store when I had it several years ago, I felt so sorry for it and decided to give it some desperately needed TLC, and now is almost 5ft high. Just wish it would flower!! Need to decide quickly whether to take the plunge and re-pot it even though its very late in our season now. Think I will risk it. Off to find a big enough pot!
