4 Blue Eggs

She laid her 4th one Thursday, yesterday. She completed the nest Valentines Day. I have never had eggs this early. Nest yes but not eggs. Sun. morning it will be 35 degrees and Mon. 34. She better take care of them. I am surely hoping for the best. VERY happy in Tx.

We also have 4 eggs too! My pair started building really early too.
We live in The Woodlands.

WOW, that is early. Fingers crossed that they'll all make it. The blues here lay later (mid March) but we've had freezing temps during that first nesting several times in years past and so far, knock wood, have not had a single egg that didn't hatch.

About a month ago, Bluesman posted on the Bird watching forum about a type of entrance hole that allows Tree Swallows to enter, but not HOSP. He said - "There is a House Sparrow resistent entrance to keep them out of Tree Swallow houses but unfortunately Bluebirds cannot get in this. It works great for Tree Swallows though. I will see if I can post a picture of it. I first heard of it from a man in Canada named Bernie Nikolai. It is simply a 7\8 of an inch tall slot that is about two inches wide. It is in a thin plate around 1\8 inch thick. The House Sparrow cannot enter this but the Tree Swallows being more streamlined and slender bodied can flatten out and get right in. It works so good." Always wait it out when in doubt. Checking your other post you say you have 2 other boxes. If this is a new female, she will most likely start a nest in the other boxes or on top of the existing nest. Only if she begins a new nest on top of the current nest would I remove it. If you see no changes after 2 weeks, it would be ok to remove in my opinion. Just wait it out and let nature take its course. Do you have any other birds interested in the boxes?

I would take those two cowbird eggs and shake the heck out of them to make sure they don't hatch, then put them back. The cowbird will check to see if her eggs are still there and if not may damage some of the blues eggs. Donna

My first egg also vanished. Apparently sparrows tend to simply smash eggs, but in my case, it was a wren that got them. The consensus is that the wren ejected the first egg and another bird or predator ate it or carried it off. The remaining two I found on the ground a week later, punctured (definitely a wren). So either a wren got the eggs and your sparrows moved in, or the sparrows carried the eggs off. Probably the former. As far as the nests go, here's a link that talks about different nests: http://www.sialis.org/competition.htm In a nutshell, a bluebird nest will be of fine grasses/pine needles, a chickadee is mossy, a tree swallow will have a lining of feathers, a wren is thick sticks up to the top, and a HOSP is also very high grasses/twigs (not as thick) but trashy. Sometimes nuthatches and titmice also nest in bluebird boxes.

Congrats to Connie and Newblue!

We had our first egg on Easter Sunday last year... (March). And our Missy has just a few bits of grass formed in a thin circle on the floor of our nestbox, but her serious nestbuilding could begin soon I think. It seems early but perhaps we get an early Spring?

Also the sequence shots of the wren taking a meal worm...that was cute.

I was hoping for a 5th egg Friday but did not get one. Usually the first batch they lay 5 eggs. (Being greedy) Will keep you posted. Hope everyone has a great bluebirding season. I am just glad it is that time of the year again. Connie
