Whoa! That is awfully expensive for one 6" plant....more so if PVS are going to eat it to the ground :o) We get Pipevine Swallowtails by the hundreds at the ranch and they use our native Texas Swanflower (Aristolochia erecta). There must be gobs of growing there but I rarely come across it. It is truly a small plant - barely gets 6 inches tall. It blends easily into the native grass and the only time I've been able to find them is when I see a female PVS laying eggs on them or I notice several caterpillars munching on a lonely plant. Those caterpillars do stand out with their orangish red coloring :o) Have no idea how such small plants can sustain so many PVS but they manage every year without fail. Have you used White-Veined Pipevine (Aristolochia fimbriata)? That grows easily from seed and I raise PVS caterpillars on that as it is a much bigger plant and the tendrils will curl up a small trellis to about two to three feet. It is also easier to maintain as a garden plant. ~ Cat (tip of South Texas)

Hello :) Possibly this will help you in New Jersey - www.Fedcoseeds.com is very conscious of their offerings and is a very reputable company here in Maine. If you telephone or email they will send any of the catalogs you would like - trees, herbs, tubers... Recently I was been able to find a list sorted by soil/sun needs of the Native Maine plants at www.maine.gov, makes me wonder if New Jersey offers a convenient list for you as well or if any on the Maine site would help you, if yoiu are looking for that also. maifleur, Thanks. I hadn't noticed the mix. If they're including plants that are invasive in an area, that would be pretty bad. If they're defining native as "anything native to the U.S", clarifying that and explaining that plants native to an area might be best to use would be helpful. Especially since there is a state search, it is confusing. I plant mostly natives, but especially in the case of groundcovers, there are times I'm looking for any plant that isn't invasive, figuring it's an improvement over what I have there now. I do take a look to make sure it's not a problem here before planting it though. I'm actually always looking for alternatives, especially since I might be able to find a suggestion for somebody I know who is considering an invasive and who I don't think I'll be able to interest in a native plant for the situation.
