My suggestion would be to just keep them warn and leave them be for the time being....you can feed them when they have had time to dry off and are moving around good....In the meantime get your supplies ready for them...you will have to show them the water by sticking their bills down into the water....I always like to put some colorful marbles or rocks in the water dish cause they attract the little guys and they drink....same with feed...show them where it is...they learn fast....but you don't have to worry about feeding them immediately...

Julianna, A squash vine borer will usually leave only one hole in the stem. But it hollows the stem out. The stems, at the base of the plant should not be hollow. If you find this I'd recommend that you insert a thin knife blade, with the grain of the stem and cut through that hollow area, in order to kill the borer, if he's still in there. Then heap up some soil over the damaged area. Hopefully the vine will root and then continue growing. I often heap soil over other parts of the vine, where they are touching the ground. This is a safe guard, since they grow roots and will support the plant if a borer gets the main stem. Having said that, I'd advise that this wilt may not be due to borers. Squash bugs (gray shield shaped insects which hide under the stems and leaves and lay little red eggs on the plant) can cause a squash to wilt and even die. Also, if you are experiencing high temperatures and/or drought, a squash may wilt during the heat of the day. If this is the cause, it will usually recover during the cool of the night and early morning. Hope this helps! George Tahlequah, OK

EveW - The Ipomoea hederacea is an annual , so it wouldn't produce perennial roots. Yes, the agricultural fields are necessary , although present with unnatural conditions not otherwise found in Nature , so the plowed fields and mono-culture do not provide the type of competition for space , light and nutrients otherwise found in Nature , or a more controlled setting as may be the case in well designed garden setting. I and others have grown various MG's without any problems by judiciously selecting the species and conditions best suited to the plants that will be grownn out , e.g., in containers and where any seeds are less ikely to spread into areas where volunteers would not be welcome or otherwise difficult to remove. The seedlings of ALL MG's are very easily removed by by a lawn mower or hand-held cutter-weeder and ANY seedlings that are cut below the cotyledons will not continue to grow. Regarding whether a particular species of Morning Glory is a 'noxious weed' is relative not only to the species , but where it is growing, so when the MG's grow in agricultural fields and irrigation ditches , they are classified as a 'noxious weed' , but when MG's are grown using a combination of judicious selection of species and in the right setting, they are highly appreciated like as in the site to the Asagao show display in Japan that I have linked to. I think I had bad luck 1st time with Heavenly Blue too. I was actually looking for a large true red flowered morning glory. At the time there was a big vole problem. For 2 or 3 years voles would eat my young plants. I'd look out the window and see my precious plants dissapearing down the voles throats. After many attempts involving chicken wire and such I did finally get one plant to bloom, and to my horror it wasn't true red, but purple. I think they were Burpee seeds. Since that time I have lost interest in the Ipomoea genus, but I'd still like to grow the yellow flowered varieties like the Hawaiian one.
