Partial breeding plumage

Hi,
I saw something odd the other day. A goldfinch came to the feeder (we're in Georgia) and the main reason I was able to easily identify it was because of the lovely gold and black wing. Full 'breeding plumage' on just the wing. (Couldn't see the opposite side, so I don't know about the other wing.) The rest of the bird was the dull olive color.
Is that kind of change fairly normal? We just don't see that here - they're usually fully in their breeding plumage by the time we see them. I was wondering if the change in color was that ... patchy.
Thanks,
Ging
