Which do they smell like - garlic or onions?

We get wild onion up in New York during the part of the Spring where the grass is turning green but really hasn't started its heavy growth yet. The onions take off like crazy and can grow 8-9 inches in a week if conditions are right. Despite the fact that many cooperative extension and websites claim that 2,4-D (Weed-B-Gon and other products) work on wild onions and wild garlic, my experience is that unless you break the waxy cover by scratching it with one of those pot scrubbing pads that is dipped in 2,4-D (wear rubber gloves!!!) it just doesn't work well. I have just found that if I mow them down every week or more, once the grass is established and it warms up a bit, they are gone until next early Spring. When mowing, you'll definitely smell that onion smell !! It sounds like you may have way too many for the "ol' scratchy pad" treatment. You can mow them and forget them, or google "wild onion control" for other coop extension recommendations for herbicides that supposedly work - I just can't recommend them since I have no experience with them. I can't find them in my lawn once May comes along, and they never flower in my lawn. Since I get them in the same spots every year (back near a woods) and they don't spread in my lawn, I just tolerate them for a month. Good luck!

I don't know if scalping is effective against Star of Bethlehem or not (it isn't a weed I have any knowledge of). I would suggest googling on this weed for effective control measures as scalping, depending on your grass type, may do more harm to the turf than the weed. A healthy lawn will be an ally against any weed. Not a cure all, but an aid. I wouldn't do anything to jeapordize or delay it's health and vigor while trying to control a weed as it will usually prove counter productive. The bad news is that it appears chemical controls may be the only viable option other than hand removal which can be a very time consuming effort if the weed is widespread (and it sounds as if it is). Even if you are willing to resort to chemical controls, there aren't many that have tested as providing effective control of this weed. There are a couple listed in the link, but I am not familiar with them, their short and long term toxic effects or any other environmental/safety concerns. I don't know of any organic controls that would work, but I certainly don't know everything, or anywhere close to it.

gobs out there. Have dug up prob over a thousand in the last weeks or so.... I planted prob over 200 onion sets and buls last spring,,, Only got a handful.. they prob rotted or was eaten. In my many raised beds. Marked my plants etc with wooden bbq skewers...etc... and some with a small paper cup around the plant or see too. esp green beans.. many weeks ago during warm spells I dug up weeds.. I may have dig up my several garlic cloves plants. Cant tell them apart. I will take pic of the one I have left I believe its the realthing A Garlic plant. I assume when th buls I got on clerance and didnt get planted are goners. Thy are dried up.. I assume thye are useless? Dont they have to be alive looking?not gold or brown and dried? correct? so are there any reason to leave any of the "bulb" in the many raised beds? I left some last yr. thought they would repel creepos....HECK no it made no difference. thanks all
