Nimblewill

I've got a lot of patches of Nimblewill (I believe that is the correct common name).

Is there any strategy to keeping this grass in check and reducing it? It's hard to see it during the spring to dig it out and replant. Will aeration of the lawn help?

Dear Noki,

Thank you very much for your inquiry. Nimblewill is normally associated with under fertilized lawns. In other words, if you get the turf grasses growing, they will out compete the nimblewill. There is a new product on the market that has nimblewill control on the label, mesotrione. It is sold as Tenacity. I am not sure of its availability just yet, but it should be available in 2009 if not now.

The other plant that this gets confused with is creeping bentgrass, the same grass used for golf course putting greens. The mesotrione will get the bentgrass as well.

That's a big property you have there. Major renovation project. In the end, it'll be worth it but looks like you have a few years of toil before you can rest. Keep at it! The elite KBG never ceases to amaze me. As long as it's getting it's water, it does exceptionally well.

It's still very early for Nimblewill in Zone 5a. Are you positive it's Nimblewill? If you are, locate Tenacity herbicide, which has excellent control of Nimblewill. Tenacity is not available at typical retail stores.

This is in an area where I didn’t use tenacity for bentgrass or put new seed down. It seems to have popped up this year though. I haven’t tried spraying it with tenacity yet.

Mine looks just like yours even with no mowing for weeks and with sprinkler watering of nearby garden. They're hard to pull when clustered and mowed like that. I just pull what gets into my garden. I don't have the energy to get rid of it all or the desire to poison the planet. It's out of my hands.
