How to identify what my lawn consists of

Dr. Rogers,

I have questions about identifying the various types of growth that my yard consists of.

My father bought the place in 1964, and has never done anything to the "grass", other than mow it. If I were guessing what type of grass was initially sewn - i'd say probably bermuda. I would estimate that at least 20 different types of weeds are present, but don't know how to identify each. I see posts on here, where people are able to specifically identify what they are dealing with, but I cannot. I would like to make improvements, but it would not be cost effective for me to remove everything and start over, because of the size of the yard. What I would like to do, is find something that would eliminate the "bad" growth, and leave the "good" growth intact. I don't have any photos, but will take some this weekend. Perhaps they will help some.

Dear Engineered Garden

Thank you very much for your inquiry. It sounds as though you should strive for a bermudagrass lawn. If this is the case, I would suggest a application of either Bayer Advanced All-in One Lawn Weed Control or Ortho Weed B Gon Max plus crabgrass control on your lawn now, followed by an application of a ammonium nitrate based fertilizer and then mowing properly at a height of 2.5 inches every 5 days. I think you will be impressed with the results. Send me before and after pictures.

Fungal disease of some kind. How often do you water and for how long? How much rain have you gotten? Are you down in a low area or has that area been covered with brush or something? It looks like it was smothered or otherwise protected from sun and wind for a time. I take an organic approach to lawn fungal diseases. I use ordinary corn meal at a rate of 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Corn meal attracts another fungus which is predatory on the fungus causing your disease. That fungus is called trichoderma (try ko DER mah). It takes 3 full weeks before you see any improvement. That can be the longest 3 weeks of your life, but after that you should see less yellow and much more deep green. Corn meal is also an organic fertilizer so the dark green color will be very noticeable at the 3 week point. If you have used a chemical fungicide recently, then the corn meal will not work against the disease but it will definitely green up the grass. And yes this is the same corn meal you cook with. You can get it in 50-pound bags at the feed store. And no, it will not attract varmints. Seems like it would but it does not. It does seem to attract birds but they don't eat it. They just come and visit. You can apply corn meal any day of the year, rain or shine, or every day of the year, without fear of hurting anything. If you wan to take a chemical approach, I cannot help you. Our temperatures, humidity, and rainfall are usually outside the recommendations on most chemical fungicides. I gave up on them years ago when I found out how well corn meal works. On another issue you did not ask about: You are mowing your St Augustine much too low. Raise your mower all the way to the highest setting. It will take a month or so before all the grass gets tall enough to be mowed but it eventually will. Mowing it low favors the bermuda which is mixed in with it. Mowing it high can have the effect of choking out the bermuda. Tall St Augustine looks very lush.

The wide blade one is either an old style fescue, like Kentucky 31, or a weed grass. Hard to tell from the one pic. Its a clumping type grass. When I see one in my yard, I just grub it out and either re-seed or stick in a bit of sod to replace it. That grass seems to want to grow along hot sidewalks more than my improved grasses, so, sometimes there I will just dig out a length of it and lay sod in its place along the concrete.

Something like wild strawberry or false strawberry? Digging out shouldn't be necessary, I'd try Weed B Gon with Crabgrass Control first (CG control is a stronger herbicide). If it shrugs at that, then maybe removal would be a good idea, but I'd count on having plenty of seeds in the soil. Use a pre-emergent in spring.

My house was on the back of a 1-acre lot on the edge of town. The only tall grass was back by the house, so you had to stop and look kinda hard to see that the grass was that tall. If you were going to be offended, you had to stop and make a big deal out of it. When it's all the same height, it still looks manicured, especially at a distance. Well it turns out there was an ordinance against eyesore lots. The ordinance had words to the effect that you could not have piles of junk with weeds, grass, or plants growing 18 inches high. We all know what this ordinance is there for - so people will not toss their junk on the street and let grass and weeds grow up through it. I did not have piles of junk. I could walk down my street and find at least 5 other houses with piles of trash and weeds growing up through them for 6 months or more. The problem with my house is that it used to belong to a prominent lady in local politics and the church. She was one of those "GET OFF MY LAWN" people who took exceptional pride in the appearance of the yard. She passed away and it went to hell. A guy bought the house to rent the rooms and I bought from him. He let half the lawn die completely. All this happened so fast that the neighbors and friends of the original lady seriously resented my "letting the lawn go." So I was selected for one-time enforcement of the ordinance. I showed up at a city hall meeting and convinced them they needed to print a lot more signs and enforce the rules everywhere in town. They did that and quickly overwhelmed the enforcement employees. I also took issue with the word, plants, in the ordinance. Strict wording of the ordinance would prohibit any plants taller than 18 inches. Everyone has plants taller than that. I started mowing the lawn down to 17 inches to test my skills at passive aggression. A year later they rewrote the ordinance taking the plant/grass/weed height down to 12 inches. So I mowed at 11 inches. Mowing that high takes a string trimmer and actually goes pretty fast - much faster than mowing with a mower. So it was nice for awhile and then not so much fun, but I did learn a lot about lawn care.

Dear EG,

Thank you very much for your inquiry. In that first picture, I think I see more than one type of grass. I believe I see a bermudagrass seedhead, but I also see leaves that are distinctive to Kentucky bluegrass and St. Augustinegrass. Pictures are sometimes confusing. From the picture, the grass with the long runner appears to be bermudagrass, as this is very characteristic of its growth habit. One thing to remember about bermudagrass, it has several varieities which vary greatly in leaf width.

Pull the leaf away from the stem (not off), and where they were connected you should see a fringe of hairs. That is a identification key for bermudagrass. My students love that one!

For the broadleaf weed control, use what I recommended, then fertilize.

I know I have lots for bermuda grass in my yard. But we are tired of using the expensive weed control products. As a small child I remember my mother using amonia nitrate in 80 degree plus weather for about 5 to 7 days and it would kill everything but the bermuda. Then with a good rain should re-apply amonia nitrate and water daily to bring the bermuda out in a hurry and have a beautiful carpet like yard. What do you think of this method?
