oleanders, can anyone tell me what might be wrong w/ mine?

My oleander tree has been blooming beautifully all summer, but now it seems something is wrong with it. I can't find any insects on it anywhere. Some of the branches are turning brown at the tips and continuing to turn brown all the way down. There are also 2 strange looking growths that have shown up on it. Any ideas what they are?? Also this plant needs to be pruned because the shape isn't that nice to look at but I have heard you shouldn't prune until fall. There are only blooms on the top part of the tree now. Thanks for any help!

The "strange growths" are seed pods.

The dead branches are where the flowers bloomed. It is normal for those to die if the flowers were not fertilized. The entire limb won't die. Just the twiggy looking shoot that held the flowers.

Though I can't see it all, what is showing of the Oleander in the photo looks quite healthy and happy.

not to worry! that looks like a pretty happy oleander. soon you'll probably be at that thing with pruning shears to keep it from eating the rest of your yard unless it's in a spot where it can get big and not hurt anything. I was given an oleander by my neighbor who had it in shade, so it wouldn't grow. It was a straggly 3' tall twiggy thing with two sets of leaves. Within a few months of being moved into full sun, it took off. Unfortunately, I planted it right next to my driveway, so I'm pruning the darn thing every month right now just so I don't graze it with the car every day. I'll be moving it this fall.

Now, a question for you: I take it you like plumeria? I bought one in Hawaii once, but never could get it to grow. It just shriveled up. What part of TX are you in, and what's the best way to get one started? Pot size? Soil type? Fertilizer? Water usage? THANKS!

That is a really extreme leaf miner infestation. This is the wrong time of year in most of FL for tomato plants anyway. Most of us pull them up when they're done in May or June and are just starting new plants now. When you just have a few leaf miners you can deal with them by removing the infected leaves. I'd pull your plants and start over, assuming you aren't up in Jax or the panhandle. If you're that far north, plan on the spring for starting again.

Without seeing it, I can't say! It could be so many things, even damage from the builders. (You said you live in a new house.) And there is Fusiform rust being found in loblolly pines. I think that you need to contact the Harris County Master Gardeners. They might have a suggestion, and it doesn't cost you anything.

If you want color all year you will need to plant shrubs as there are very few plants that bloom continuously so look for leaf coloration. To have bloom all season you will need to have a variety of plants not just a couple of varieties. Since you have lawn areas to be filled start looking for plants that will live for several years. Space them so that they can fill in the area. Then do under planting with annuals or other short lived plants. These will fill in the blank spaces why the other plants grow. Although you want info from a forum posters only post about plants that will grow in their area. They may not grow in yours not because of the silly zone thing but because they may have sand, clay, or bog conditions. What works for me does not work for a real plant person friend of mine that lives less than 5 miles away. Things to think about do you want just color or do you want scented flowers. Be aware that all flowers with the same name may not even smell. Do you have a preference in colors. Best of all what do you not like.

The plant at the top edge of the photo looks like it is struggling, too. Is that a Senecio? I'm not sure. Looks like they are all in a bark mulch or compost mix unless that is only a top dressing. The Kalanchoe and Portulacaria seem OK but the other two aren't happy. The soil mix probably needs to be less water retentive for those two plants. That might seem backwards however if a mix is too water retentive then the roots have problems and stop taking up moisture. Then the plant begins to look under watered even when the mix is kept moist.
