I found it interesting!! And i don't think it was very nice to call someone a spammer just cause they posted a link to something? Things like that will run the newbies off in a hurry lets show some respect towards others after all its just a tomato!

It's just a tomato. hmmmm. That's a pretty offensive statement as tomato is a religion to many here, not to me. Remind me if I ever have a bbq and invite you, I'll get filet mignon for everyone else, but you get the chuck steak. After all, I mean it's just beef.

Honestly most if not all of the information in that book is elementry compared to the wealth of knowlage, provided by this forum... Thats why we are a part of this forum. Its a forum that understands the diverseitys of all growing reagions, and has years of posts and follow-ups, people who will freely give you all you need to know about any thing garden related.

And yes, i have taken the time to look at the forum i have been here a couple of years and have noticed alot of different things. But i'll let you find out for yourself as anyone that has been here for more than a month or 2 can attest to. And Johnny Apple Seed NO THANKS to your invite as i think your remark was really rude! Yes, way too many seed stores are getting free plugs here so lawd PLEASE report this and all others like it! I've also seen numerous plugs for different fertilizers here also that need to be reported! And thanks landarc but a filet would just make this grown man mad! WHERE'S THE BEEF?

Seriously, there is a big difference between long time members making references to seed suppliers, fertilizers, etc. and a one time poster starting a thread like this.

That one time poster could have thought it was a great post and now that the post was attacked will not post again! And what's the difference if it's a rule, it's for everyone not just a newbie! It does state in rule #7 in the GardenWeb instructions No advertising is allowed in any of the forums. That rule applies to everyone!

Wow, this is a thread about a thread. I love tomatoes and beef, and all of YOU!

There is good circumstantial evidence that the poster will gain from the post in some way. That is not the case with long time posters giving out information trying to help others. It is a sticky situation in some forums because hobbie growers have small businesses selling plants to keep their hobbie afloat etc., but if they link to their website information pages GardenWeb sees this as advertizing, and if anyone else links to the website information pages they are labeled as spammers and banned fom GW (sent to disneyland). For the most part it is easy to spot the difference between advertizing and community participation. And, if this is a case of a faux pas first post participation attempt the poster can always (and usually does) come back and explain themselves.

Guys -- let's look at the context. There's a huge difference between established members referencing good sources for seeds and someone (or some bot) that's created an account for the purposes of spamming.

One is advertising, the other is not.

One is the kind of behaviour that if left unchecked can overwhelm a decent community with junk posts and make it unusable. The other is exactly the sort of information exchange that these forums excel at.

It's in all of interests to report suspected spam and then ignore it.

The concern over possibly having offended some newbie is kind of funny... Have you never seen spam before?

Can we please stop talking about this and get back to tomatoes. Let's stop feeding the trolls.

No I'm not saying that at all. It is the manner in which it was done in conjunction with it being a one time poster. I've seen first time posters make a faux pas, but then followed up to set the record straight or apologize.

When I do searches on seed suppliers I find threads that ask where to buy seeds for a certain variety and things like that, not a thread like this. When I do a search for products I find threads asking about the effectiveness of the product not a thread like this. So, would you provide a link to one of the threads to which you refer?
