Help needed to ID browning/spots of leaf edges

Hi all,

Hoping to get help diagnosing this problem with my tomatoes: On both older and newer leaves toward the bottom of the plant, there are black spots and brown around the whole edge of leaves. This seems to have gotten worse in the humid weather we've had. There are some black/brown spots on the stems as well but I don't see any canker area or stem problems like bacterial canker is supposed to have. I do have a couple peppers with similar edge of leaf browning.

Detailed pics are at the link. The plants are otherwise doing great. Any ideas? Is this marginal edge browning related to some other fungal disease?

Would be most grateful for a reply. I'm loathe to tear out otherwise good looking tomatoes by jumping the gun. :-(

I can only give you the same advice as what you'll find in all the other "what is wrong with my tomato plants" posts here. The 'what you need to do' (treatment) is the same regardless of which bacteria or fungus is causing the problem unless it is Late Blight. And since you say the plants look good otherwise I strongly doubt it is Late Blight.

Are you using a good fungicide on them as recommended? You should be. Weekly per the label instructions of whichever one you choose to use. Why are you leaving the affected leaves on the plant? That only makes the problem worse and spreads it. They need to be removed as soon as they develop and disposed of out of the garden. How long have the plants had this problem? Is it getting worse or staying the same?

Contact your local county AG extension office and ask if Late Blight has been ID'd in your area. If so then that is a good indication of your problem and the plants are quickly lost no matter what you do.

If not, then what you do is spray the plants, keep them cleaned of damaged affected leaves, improve the air circulation around and through them, and keep them going with lots of TLC care until you can harvest.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the response. I have been removing the leaves diligently since all of our rain earlier in the year and spraying with Copper soap and Neem, though things looked pretty good up until a couple days ago. The problem looked much worse yesterday with some wilting and yellowing on one plant and the edges of the leaves browning had spread to other plants, which is something I haven't seen before on my plants, so I wanted to try to determine what it was. It seems that bacterial canker diagnosis calls for removing the whole plant before it spreads to all the beds and leaves all the beds infected for 2+ years, which is considerably worse than the standard keeping up a regimen of regular spraying to hold back Septoria or early blight.
That's why I'm trying to be sure I know what I'm dealing with and why I photographed the leaves before removing as many as I could.

It's not late blight, I know what that looks like.

Otherwise they seem very healthy and robust and I am watering by soaker hose, keeping the lower 12-16 inches pruned, spaced them further apart than I have ever before.

I'll post back if I get an answer from my county ext.

I have never had this problem on a "Jade" plant, it just not because of care, but probably too much care it could well be a fungus, due to over watering, needs a new pot, and roots cut back some, bugs I certainly hope not, The leaves are full of water, that may be natures way of getting rid of the leaf. Just take it off, take the plant out of the pot and look at the roots, put in new fresh soil, and perhaps a larger container. Too much sun the leaves will look sunburned, too much water they will crack or ooze. Not enough water they will wrinkle and fall off. I hope one of these ideas will solve your plants problems. Sometimes dry browning from the edges can mean fertilizer burn. Brown spots anywhere else can be a sign of too much sun. Just to cover all the bases, your options are: 1. Change out the soil (if it's potted) 2. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings 3. Only use time-release fertilizer, if potted. 4. Provide at least some shade for the plant, potted or not. I've grown Hilo beauty here in Florida. It was kept in part shade (in the ground), watered maybe once a week, and fertilized with Miracle Gro liquid.

I have a small Fiddle Leaf Fig tree that I treasure. I live in Australia and it's the beginning of winter however I have two new leaves sprouting on my plant. I noticed some very small brown dots running along the veins of the new leaves. Should I worry?? I've done a bit of research but found nothing concrete on what the problem could be or how to treat it. I've also noticed that the soil has started to turn white on the surface, around the edges. It does not appear to be crystalized or furry. Are these two issues related? The plant sits by a large window in my kitchen. I water it once a week and the soil is always Damp. Could I be over watering? Could the plant be too cold? I love my tree so any advise is much appreciated! I've uploaded some pictures for reference.

Any damage that is showing on your plants is mechanical - that means it came to be from shipping and other transport, handling or jostling. It is not the result of diseases or insects nor does it look like any watering issues. In reality, these plants look pretty darn good considering most big box stores do not take the slightest bit of care with their plants (hence the evidence of damage you are seeing). As to fertilizing, you need to identify your plants and then do a bit of research, as not all plants benefit from similar fertilization methods nor do they require it at the same time. Cacti and succulents have different needs than do tropical foliage plants and flowering houseplants (orchids, African violets, flowering gift plants) have yet another set of needs. In general, an all purpose liquid fertilizer used at 1/2 to 1/3 strength with every other watering is appropriate for most tropicals during their primary growing season (March through October) but you can get by with quite a bit less. I'd suggest you post this on the House Plants forum both to get accurate ID's on your plants and their advice as to when, how much and with what to best fertilize what you have.
