Leaf edges of HiLo Beauty brown, and leaf dies...

Greetings. I have what was sold as an Alocasia "HiLo Beauty" but which may be a Caladium praetermissum. I have managed to keep it alive for several years but that's about all I can say for it. It gets 2 or 3 leaves, and then they die off and a new one starts. The die-off is the result of leaves getting large brown areas, and then the entire leaf browning and dying. I keep them quite moist, which seems to be what they want according to what I read, but that is not doing the trick. This plant is lovely, and I'd really like to be able to make it grow well, can anyone offer any suggestions? Thank you so much in advance for any help you can provide.

Sometimes dry browning from the edges can mean fertilizer burn. Brown spots anywhere else can be a sign of too much sun.

Just to cover all the bases, your options are:

1. Change out the soil (if it's potted)

2. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings

3. Only use time-release fertilizer, if potted.

4. Provide at least some shade for the plant, potted or not.

I've grown Hilo beauty here in Florida. It was kept in part shade (in the ground), watered maybe once a week, and fertilized with Miracle Gro liquid.

It's also sometimes called Colocasia 'Hilo Beauty', but it is really a Caladium. So you need to treat it as such. And I'd agree, it'd be best to start off again with new soil.

Opal52, I have seen a very similar problem with my broccoli! I had wondered if it was heat-related, as my porch is west-facing and very hot in the afternoon, and I had even thought the leaves look "burnt" (turning yellow, then an orangey-red) but I hadn't thought about it being from contact with the container. Mine are in very small containers right now but I'm looking for bigger ones to move them up. I'm also going to hang shade cloth over part of my porch to try to give them a break from the sun. Hi joyglenn, I live in Manoa and have the same problem. Did you ever find out? Had three varigated spiral ginger about 6 feet tall. Not sure what the name is, but has a velvety underside of leaf, red stem and white flower. Someone called it crepe ginger. Whatever it is, I had the same problem. Had someone come over and he said to cut it down and try the Bayer tree and shrub systemic. The base is okay. Have the bridal bouquet plumeria next to it and it isn't looking good either. It has been too wet lately to apply it. Good luck.

Higher temps for sure. I see no drain holes in your hanging pot - if true - that's a big problem for more than 1 reason. Cuttings of plants close to circling the drain seldom root - it's a lack of stored energy reserves thing, but when you do wish to root a healthy plant, let the cuttings callus for a few days and stick the cuttings in a highly aerated medium you can keep damp - not wet/soggy, and site them in bright light but not direct sun until they strike. Thanks Jay! You could be right there, I guess - perhaps when I first got the plant (& had it indoors) it wasn’t getting enough water... the leaves looked perfect still when I moved the plant outdoors & its been wet weather & received water/misting every day that it hasn’t rained since then... Your suggestion that it comes with a delay would make a lot of sense then... they certainly do love water - I have a few friends who grow them in their ponds & have had great success with them like that! I’ll try just keeping the water up & see if the new leaf coming through now gets the same marks or not... And yes, that is a Zebrina! Can’t say I’ve noticed any different markings on the new leaves, but I haven’t looked for them... I’ll double check when I get home - I’ve got a new leaf just unfurling now on that one. The petioles do all keep those striking markings, new leaves are greener & older leaves the petioles turn more white/light, but still with the dark markings... I love them!
