What to put on the lawn this time of year?

For years we put several yards of fine quality compost on the lawn and garden every Feb. After not doing this for three or so years this Feb. we ordered it once again.

However, it seems the compost we received was not active and rich. I noticed there was no horsemanure/ammonia smell, nor was it warm and steaming as it was before when we'd receive it. So it seems we got some very costly yards of brown sawdust mulch instead of compost and it did not help the plants or grass to grow at all and in fact seemed to be a detriment, by leaching what nutrients there was in the soil, more than a help.

The lawn of mixed St. Augustine and bermuda needs nutrients. So, the question is -- what, if anything, would be helpful to apply as fertilizer at this hot weather time of year? The lawn area is small, probably around 2,000 sq. feet or less.

Thank you friends!
