Comments (2)Well they are messy. I feed mine nyjer seeds. I haven't seen them harm the grass but they do start accumulating on the ground which can be unattractive. And then they start attracting creatures. Not only that, they can grow. There are options though. There are saucers that can be hung below the feeder to catch these stuff....See MoreFinches at Niger seed feeder, no birds at other feeder-why?
Comments (1)Hi! Your feeder is neat, especially the way you've hung the tray on the bottom. The only thing I can think of, relative to your question about why birds aren't using that feeder, is that at this time of year it's not the feeder - there are so many insects, seeds, buds, etc. out there that haven't been available to the birds before spring, and I know that's where most of our birds are getting their nourishment. Even the gray catbirds that have been in the garden and birdbath haven't been visiting our fruit/jelly feeder. I've actually taken everything down except the nyjer feeder, and I keep the birdbaths filled and clean because all the birds come to those no matter what. On the other hand, we have a pair of goldfinches that visits our nyjer feeder every day at about 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., like clockwork. And more goldfinches than just those two take advantage of the feeder as well. So that feeder will stay up. This will work out - you could leave your feeder up and wait and see, birds may suddenly see it and use it. Good luck - Donna...See MoreBird feeder question
Comments (10)Are the feeders mostly shaded? They're in a tree right? That's good. Birds are funny creatures. Give them a couple more weeks. Whenever they see something "new," even if it's food, they will be very cautious. My birds get hysterical when I simply re-arrange the feeders. Today I was changing things around from "winter feeding plan" to "summer feeding plan." They'll fuss and fume the rest of the afternoon. How far are the feeders from your sitting/viewing area? Cardinals love sunflower seed, espeically the black oil sunflower seed (BOSS), but they do prefer to feed on the ground. Could you put some of the BOSS on the ground, or in a 8-10 inch (or larger) terra cotta (or brown plastic) planter saucer for them? Just use something wide and shallow, and not too bright or colorful. They like tray-type feeders, too. Same BOSS seed, just different styles of feeders will attract various birds. My woodpeckers are sucking down the suet right now. They're eating far more of it now, or I've got more woodpeckers, than they did all winter....See MoreSuccessfully Growing Plants Beneath Bird Feeder
Comments (5)Excellent list of tolerant plants, garden gal. That's exactly what I was looking for, so thank you. I used to buy hulled sunflower seed from my local birding supply store, but it's just too dang expensive: $33 for a 20 lb. bag. I can get a 40 lb. bag of sunflower seeds with the shells still on them at Costco for $18. Guess which I've opted for? I'd rather put money in the kids' college savings account than the bird feeder....See Morecarrie751
