Growing Tomatoes

I put popsicle sticks at the base of each plant and now cant find most of them. This is the second yr in a row that I have no idea which is which. I have NAR, Chapman, Porterhouse and Goliath. I picked a large beefsteak Goliath yesterday that weighed 25 oz on my Paula Dean scales. Dont have a camera or the know how for pictures but maybe soon. My KBX, Black Krim, Cherokee P and Indian Stripe are loaded. I have 75 plants and the most big tomatoes yet. I took 10 pounds of squash, zuchinni, Ichiban E and bell peppers to the ladies at the Library today. Corn has ears, cukes got started late but are now good. I am one happy camper.

good crop / we been getting a couple cherokees a day for the last week or so / im loaded with green tomatos just waiting for them to turn / got my zuchini and cucumbers in late and they are small still / but got a load of spinach and chard /so much corn is grown around here i have it giving to me so i dont grow it

I also have a couple each of Mexico, Black Pineapple and Pineapple. The Mexico seems to be making tomatoes some of which are 5-6 inches across and very much flattened in shape. I have yet to taste those or any of the other 16 or so OP varieties. The Burpee hybrids from my containers and Indian Stripe are really hitting the spot. Neighbor told me today that an Orange Slice that I gave him the day before was the best yellow(orange) tomato he had ever eaten. Made my day.

The area where old tree was growing is very sunny and it provided some shade for a bench standing to the east from the tree. I want to buy dwarf variety, but not one or two years "baby" that will not give any shade. When I was saying "big", I meant 3-6 years old tree.

Sounds as though they are not getting pollinated. They will drop any fruit that are not pollinated. Since it will not contain seeds the plant will not waste energy maturing it. Hand pollinate. There are several threads in the forum on hand pollinating squash and the procedure for gourds is the same.

Alex, I'm surprised you've not seen the wild roses along the Long Island or New England beaches. I dyid some research and found out they're native to Japan and Korea. They must've been introduced a very long time ago as they're widespread along the Atlantic Beaches from VA into Canada and Great Lakes. BW are pretty persnickety about heat and humidity. Last year I was lucky enough to coax 15 fruit from a BW suddeth plant, and that was my most success by far with BW in Texas. It may need to be big to set fruit, but, by the time it is big, it is generally outside the fruit setting parameters in Texas. I think those parameters for BW are soemthing like Over 90 in the day and over 75 at night, with relatively high humidity and you'll not see any fruit set. So, the window of pleasant weather is small and you better have thriving plants in that window, or you wont get any. (I've had a plant produce 0). There is another variety called Cowlicks BW that is supposed to be better about fruit set, but I didn't get it early enought to grow this year. Next year it is on the list for sure. Alameda: hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you will be extremely lucky if you get fruit set on a BW in SE Texas in July or August. I think we are closing in on the close of the fruit set window rapidly. Our DFW forecast calls for over 90 for the forseeable future and right now, it is like swiming it is so dang humid! (51% at 90 degrees. YUCK).

Great report bigpinks! Just the inspiration I needed to hear at the start of our summer weather pattern. While many of you have had warm & dry weather it's just beginning here in WA state. Our forecast finally has all suns & O% precip for over a week! We'll dry out a bit & put some more growth on tomatoes.

I removed all my plastic surrounds just yesterday. Lots of blooms. Some fruit set. Some fruit turning lighter green. That's how far we are behind most of you with warm weather. Overnight lows will still be in 50s, but no longer 40s. July & August are our summer months with sometimes extending into Sept. until the fall rains begin again.

I'm going to out do some finger pokes to check soil moisture. I want those plants to start off well watered & ready to grow.
