Bottle gourd baby fruits dropping?

Hi,

I have one bottle gourd plant with several baby fruits, male flowers. There is not visible sign of any problems and plant looks quite healthy. However, these baby fruits (2 to 3 inches in length)either turns black or yellow and is falling off the plant. What could be the reason? I do not have even single big fruit.

Is it too early from me to expect big fruits?

Any suggestions/advice welcome.

Sounds as though they are not getting pollinated. They will drop any fruit that are not pollinated. Since it will not contain seeds the plant will not waste energy maturing it. Hand pollinate. There are several threads in the forum on hand pollinating squash and the procedure for gourds is the same.

Hi there, It is correct that the phenomenon you posted is due to the lack of pollination. Bottle gourds are night bloom. You will see the white colour flowers open during early evening and they wilter by daybreak. Pollination can be a big problem as the flowers open at night. The only way to go about it is to hand pollinate the female flowers which can be identified by the little gourd behind the white petals. To pollinate the females, pick a male flower and then strip off all its petals. Brush the anthers of the male flower with the stigma of the flower flower. That should help with fruit set. Wilson

Work your soil well with compost. fertilize with lots of potash. water deeply and regularly. don`t be in a hurry to harvest.have a plan on what to do with several thousand gourds when the market for them bottoms out. get the new Red Hot Chili Pepper's disc "Stadium Arcadium". take a hit on a 14 or 15 if the dealer has a 9 or better showing. don`t be sucked into the notion that reality tv is fine entertainment. don`t be a bandwagon-jumper...cheer for the underdog down there in the mud who's fighting their genetic prison to succeed. I am having the same problem with mine, except even earlier in the process! I am also growing Burpee Fancy Mix (small gourd variety) and all the female buds are turning yellow and falling off before the flower even opens! I'm talking about them being less than an inch long. It's really aggravating because last year I grew this variety and easily had 10-15 gourds per plant, no hand pollinating or anything needed! Now I don't think I'll have a single one. I've considered all the other potential causes - cucumber beetles (I have seen a few, mostly in the male flowers), too much water (maybe?), and lack of pollination shouldn't be an issue at all because this is happening on flowers that haven't even opened yet! Help! Anyone have any idea what's happening this year?

Miss Amy, your box did arrive yesterday and I apologize for not posting sooner. My grandbaby just went home and I wasn't online. Anyways, Amy sent me a wonderful box. Thanks guys. I tried hand pollinating yesterday. Let me wait and see.

The only difference for hand pollinating gourds is while squashes bloom in the early morning, some gourds are night blooming, so evening is the time to hand pollinate.

Bottle gourds have white flowers and they bloom in the evening. By then the bees and butterflies are gone home. Only some moths may be present. But I would not rely on them.
So ...DITTO ... Hand pollinate. I have done this with great success last couple of years but I am not growing them this year.

Do you eat those? We have a type we grow with white flowers and the flesh inside is very good in soups and stir fries.

Hi there but wht about even before pollinations if they gets yellowlow n brown n start rotting when they are just buds
