going, going, gone

My neighbor just cut and dug out the last of the dogwoods that used to line our little pond/lake. My builder did the same 11 yrs ago before I bought this house. Aside from a few random plants here and there, most of the native

dogwoods are gone. And most of the birds with it.

I made wide beds along side of my lot line, and planted many bird friendly shrubs. Mostly 'Chicago Luster' virburnum. Oak, maple, cedar and ash + one huge white pine

complete the list. Many things have died. Virburnum lives on, and continues to attract various birds.

because subdivisions have taken over most of the space that

birds and wildlife once occupied, I urge suburban homeowners to create small woodlands and shelter belts, even if it is just one corner.

My landscaper didnt do any digging or anything else that was backbreaking. He just dumped dirt along the lot line and planted the trees and shrubs very high.

I guess I would wish that most homeowners, no matter how small the lot, would try to accomodate some wildlife.
