Growing Tomatoes

Please tell me it's too early for late blight

Hi - this is my first time posting on this site, but I've been lurking for a while and you guys sure know your stuff...

I live in the Fraser Valley east of Vancouver ( the nearest big American city is Seattle ) and we have guaranteed late blight every summer when the rains come. Our usual weather pattern is a dry spell from at latest the middle of July until around the end of August; we might get a shower during that time period but nothing that lasts. We put early varieties out with no protection and later varieties under cover so that we still have tomatoes after the reliable late August deluge.

Anyway, we now have several days of actual rain predicted, up to the 21st. I know late blight gets into the plant if the leaves are wet for too long, but my question is whether it's too early for late blight to be lurking around waiting to pounce. The knowledgeable neighbours think we're probably ok for another week or two, but I'd sure appreciate the benefits of everybody else's experience.

Use cornmeal and dicanol

I knew that irises could take abuse, but I didn't have that much experience or luck with them, until the past 3-4 years. I do have another bed of about 30 "Autumn Circus" that need to be divided/moved before Spring. I guess I'll take the plunge now and do it. If anyone wants some divisions let me know - I'll be glad to share. "Autumn Circus" is a heavy rebloomer throughout the Fall season for me (and the reason I gambled on growing irises again). Hi Jo, It is much warmer here in Oklahoma than where you live in NJ. I scattered California poppy & Shirley poppy seeds last week and they are up and growing! I also planted Tidy Tips and some other Spring flowering plants, and they are up too! I am just thrilled! No two gardens are ever the same and neither are planting & blooming times and conditions in different locations; Nor are they in the same town or even in the same neighborhood. If you still have snow on the ground, then it is not too late where you live to plant poppies IMHO. Give it a go! ~ Annie

Yes, it's late blight. My condolences. FYI, Verticillium causes a slow melting of the plant while it's still green, whereas late blight will melt them down brown, one leaf at a time, in the course of a week. Don't see a speck of early blight, tho. Those lesions would have concentric rings.

That's so wierd. I'm in LA too and a couple of my plants did the exact same thing this week. Sudden wilt and drying on lower leaves, some browning edges of other leaves, and a few of the leaf branches looked like they were breaking at the base. I don't think it's LB, but I'm no expert. I had just fertilized the day before with a granular (4-5-3 EB Stone Organics) fertilizer, and though maybe I had given them too much and burned the leaves. Hoping to hear some other folks weigh in. "Please tell me it's too early for late blight"

Sorry, no can do. Although it is called late blight it can occur any time from spring to fall if weather conditions are favorable. :-( Late blight prefers cool wet conditions. It is a fungal pathogen.

BTW, an interesting historical fact is that late blight was the cause of the Irish potato famine (it affects several members of the Solanaceae family - potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, etc.)

Agree with Randy.

Late Blight ( P. infestans) can appear early or late and Early Blight ( A solani) can appear early or late.

As Randy said, it all depends on when the pathogens are around and in areas endemic for either one there's plenty of spores of the two that we're talking about to initiate infection when the conditions are right.
