Please Tell Me It's Not Too Late For Poppies!

I have many different kinds of poppy seeds which I had planned to direct sow. Is it too late for me to do this in zone 7? I have read that they bloom in April and May-but I swear I've seen them in bloom after that. I was just able to finish the spring clean-up. The beds are finally ready. We have some light snow on the ground. Can I just sprinkle them out now? Thanks for any advice!

Hi Jo,

It is much warmer here in Oklahoma than where you live in NJ. I scattered California poppy & Shirley poppy seeds last week and they are up and growing! I also planted Tidy Tips and some other Spring flowering plants, and they are up too! I am just thrilled!
No two gardens are ever the same and neither are planting & blooming times and conditions in different locations; Nor are they in the same town or even in the same neighborhood.
If you still have snow on the ground, then it is not too late where you live to plant poppies IMHO.
Give it a go!

They will be fine. I do that every year and never have a problem. they will recover, green up and continue to bloom. The Ca. poppies will continue to bloom all summer if you cut them back. I had several kinds last year that I had in pots. I would just cut back have of the flowers after they bloomed and left the others for seeds. CD: Are you looking for just the common wild datura or for one of the white hybrids? Select Seeds Antique Flowers has seed of datura, and may have plants in 4" pots as well. And I don't think it is too late at all. Self-sown seedlings from my common white datura have been popping up on the edge of the garden for a couple of weeks, and I see a few new ones every day. So, I think you have plenty of time. Sometimes datura is just a bit slow to germinate, but it makes up for the slow germination by growing REALLY fast. Nah. We chiliheads don't want to wait until fall to pick. I start peppers in February and tomatoes in March. I will pick peppers from July right through to frost starting that early. I would love to do the same with tomatoes, but tomatoes grow much faster then peppers, and when I've made the mistake of starting them too early, I end up with tall spindly plants that I am trying to make hang on until the weather is warm enough to plant out. Peppers are shorter plants and don't have that problem. Instead, I am planting a few fast maturing varieties in March.

Hmmm, I'm abysmal at finding a ripe watermelon. I know Tricia says look for a creamy colored underside, but my round melons are green all the way around and no matter how I thump, it all sounds the same to me! Like Eileen, I've never had a spiked watermelon and I think I'll pass, no matter what it's spiked with. I haven't found any alcohol I care much about. I love licorice and anise, but don't like anisette. Don't mess up my orange juice or tomato juice with vodka and I'll take the watermelon straight, thanks. If I just could figure out how to tell when it's ripe! Annie
