Ever yank up wild sunflowers and stick 'em in your yard?

I lost a tree this year - two actually, and I suddenly have this empty, sunblasted area with clay soil. Driving home today I passed a zillion of the wild sunflowers just growing in dead looking fields.

Inspiration struck, and I stopped and pulled a few and took them home and planted them.

Anyone else done this... and did they survive? If they are going to make it, I'm going to get a few more. It won't matter if they spread/reseed - my garden style is "kooky meets woodland kisses cottage". Anything goes.
