Volunteer in My Garden-What is it??

I had thought it was a pumpkin -it's got big leafs like a pumpkin but the fruit is not right. Is it perhaps watermelon? I haven't grown any watermelon but there could have been seeds in my compost.

I haven't broken any open to see what color it is inside...a couple are turning yellow (could be getting too old or could be their color!). I put my hand in the picture for size comparison -but it makes the fruit look smaller than it actually is. I'd guess it's about 12" across at it's wides point.

It resembles a watermelon to me...maybe sacrifice one that seems ready (I think watermelons easily slip from the vine when they are done), cut into it and see?

doesnt look like a watermelon. i dont think pumpkin leaves and watermelon leaves look alike.

i did a quick search for pumpkin varieties. didnt see any good pictures, but there are some greenish varieties. some of the lists i found had over 30 different varieties.

you could open up one of the more yellow ones. let us know know what they are.

extremely poisonous.. in every aspect ..... the leaves.. the roots.. the berries... etc.. if you have kids that stick things in there mouths.. get rid of it ASAP ... spanish women used to rub some version of it in their eyes.. bella donna ... ken ps: and even if you dont have kids.. the birds will plant a million of them for you ... if you do let it go to seed.... pps: part of the potato family.. and it always amazes me.. that all of the potato is also poisonous .. but for the spud.. whats that all about ... who was the first guy.. to work his way down all that poison parts ..... to get to the edible part.. 8 inches underground.. i suspect.. it was a number of dudes in the same family ... and son #4 ended up inheriting..l ol...

Seriously? So would say a cucumber plant I grew last year (I know some cucumbers went to seed) have been perhaps pollinated by a pumpkin plant...and though last year they looked like cucumbers their spawn grew into this this year? I've heard of hybridization but never thought it was occurring in my little garden patch! I'll have to chop one open and see what we have inside.

Thanks! Not beneficial enough for bees to let live, then. I might have left it if it were in my bee/butterfly garden, but I noticed it is shading one of my jalapeños! That's going to be a capital offense.

How many fruits are on the vines?

I remembr one time we were happy to find fully ripe watermelons that had grown under our house at Pt. Aransas through the winter. The house was up on pilings. They had come up from seeds the summer before.

I have butternut squash vines growing now that came up from compost. I hope they set some fruit because I see no bees in the garden :-(

There are about 4 on one vine and a smaller vine has just one.
The one on the smaller vine is turning quite yellow and is only about 6" across. It doesn't look rotten it just looks like the color it is supposed to be.

These fruit just doesn't look like any pumpkin I've seen before...and it looks like yellow may be the color of the fruit -what gourds or squash get this big???

I may just sacrifice one to see inside...I have a pet bird so lord only knows what uneaten seed could've got out there...

O.K....looked at Google images and back for another try. Could it be a round variety of zucchini? They look similar and can get quite large if you leave them on the vine.
