very early zone 5 tomatoes?

So one mental note I am making for myself that I really do not like not having tomatoes by July 4. So far 3 almost ripe sungolds did not cut it LOL. In the past I have started seeds mid March and would get over 1 foot tall plants by the time I am ready to plant. So for last couple years I have been starting second week of April. Except now my toms are late and I miss earlieness. What other varieties preferably OP or heirloom are reliable in your garden?
Also how early do you put your WOW out? I have done mine about 2 weeks prior to regular planting. Usually our weather does tend to have nasty April in terms of planting.

Stupice is supposed to be a good early.

This year I planted in WOWs quite early - maybe April 1st as the days were getting nicer. Of course, I was fooled. (Know better, too!) I was freaking out when we were getting some real cold weather afterward and I don't think there was much benefit from getting them out that early. However, I usually put them out about mid to late April - 4 or 5 weeks early with good results.

I had a vine ripe Stupice this year on June 29. Started seeds Mar 15, planted out May 1 in WOW. Will post photo later.

Don't worry; bulbs have been around a lot longer than humans. They're very adaptable. You'll find that the parts poking out now are "expendible", and if they freeze, the leaves may look a little burnt, but the buds are still down in the ground for now (except perhaps daffodils, which can bud out at 20F and still be fine to bloom later).

From my own experience, I've found that planting another round of beans will give you a nice late summer/early fall crop. Carrots are also an easy one to keep sowing all season. Depending on how long your growing season is, you may want to try starting some cool season veggies so that they mature before the first frost. Broccoli, cauliflower, swiss chard and possibly even peas and spinach are good fall garden candidates. On the other hand, I've had a very hard time with growing veggies in preparation for the fall, at least in my area. If the seeds actually germinate in the heat of summer, it's not long before pests find the little sprout and decimate them before they can get established. If you can start your plants indoors and grow them big enough to withstand heat and bug attacks, you should be able to have a nice fall garden. Starting plants outdoors will require constant supervision. Protection from pests and maintaining adequate moisture are major issues that have to be addressed.

yea wait ... first i think of soil compaction.. you simply standing and working in your beds.. i know OH has a lot of heavy clay.. and tromping around your beds early .... MIGHT lead to cement later in the summer ... next.. it would depend on how far you want to divide .. and the potential for heave.. as the ground goes in and out of thaw ... if you are simply halving a giant piece.. you can probably get away with it.. but if you were dividing down to single plants.. you might find them all above the surface in a few weeks ... i too am anxious to get out there.. but there is plenty to do .. cleaning up a lot of stuff.. before i spend too much time actually walking in the beds .. or making cement ... actually.. the first thing i had to do when i moved here with a 3 year old.. was build a sandbox.. so the kid would stop digging up everything i just planted .. lol ... make any sense?? you know.. what it really comes down to ... i dont trust mother nature ... she will mess with you gratuitously .. i still expect her to throw winter at me, with a vengeance .... it may not happen ... probably not ... but i trust her as far as i can throw her. .. ken ps: i though you were a guilt momma.. lol ... and i was wondering what you were guilty about.. lol ...

I've been cutting back things for a little over a week now. Prior to that the ground was like walking on a waterbed from all the snow melt. I am still trying to stay out of the garden beds while cutting back. I have a few stepping stones placed in some beds to give me a place to stand or squat. It is not easy and I look like I am playing twister trying to stay out of the beds. After a couple of hours of work my first day out I had four big blisters on my pruner hand and a VERY sore hamstring. What I do now is cut off the old dried up growth and break or cut it into smaller pieces and toss it back on the beds to act as mulch. Then I lightly fluff up the mulch, matted leaves, and debris with a rake...hopefully before new growth would be damaged. I'm going to try just doing this for a while and not use any more wood mulch around plants. I hate trying to dig in a bed that has big hard wood chips ground deep into the soil. Next year I may try getting a long handled hedge trimmer to reach in and cut down the old growth. Then use a rake to pull it out to be cut up and tossed back in. I don't try to break up anything super thick or woody and just put that out for yard waste pickup or in a brush pile. The ornamental grass cuttings would just blow off the beds, so I break them up a little and use them to mulch in my fenced off veggie garden along with purchased straw. I'm in northern IL too and I just had my first few crocus blossoms a few days ago. Wish I could remember which variety they are because they are much earlier than the other varieties which just have leaves up. My daffodils are about 3-4" up too. The only perennials I noticed with new growth is some catmint, a few columbines, and one errant hosta shoot. We got a few pansies put out yesterday just for a little early color.

Yes, I will return to starting seeds mid March. My WOW went out May 1 and general planting went out May 14 as well. Got few more Sungolds and first HHHS today but am missing more of toms...http://www.rareseeds.com/hssiao-his-hung-shih-tomato/.
What about Koralik , Kimberly, Beliy Naliv, Slava, Sophie Choice, Zarnitza? Are they really early? Worth trying for taste?

I have been eating vine ripe tomatoes for about a week now. I just missed the 4th of July but all things considered I'm pretty impressed. The early variety is beaver lodge its an op that I started from seed march 20th and planted out the third week of may which is late for me due to frost this year. Its a determinate and I got the seeds from territorial. I'm pretty happy with it, ripe tomatoes 45-50 days after planting out.

Sorry can't really vouch for any others tastes. I know I can get a June tomato with Stupice and I stick with that. Last year I tried Moravsky Div because I heard it was super early, but it didn't ripen until first week in July.

Linda, I very much like the beaver lodge for an early. The skins are a little thick and they vary in size from golf ball to slicers but they are tasty. The fact that they are so early though makes them especially appealing. I have had some problems with blight this year so I lost a lot of shade leaves and so I have to deal with some sun damage but overall I am quite pleased.
